The rise of male dominance had far reaching<br />
consequences from the throne room to the bedroom.<br />
Worship of the nurturing Mother Goddess became<br />
overshadowed by worship of the stern Father God.<br />
Sacred prostitution was desecrated. Women were<br />
reduced to the status of possessions. Ongoing wars<br />
provided an ample supply of slaves and common<br />
whores who were often brutally treated.<br />
While severely overshadowed and sometimes<br />
driven into secrecy, the erotic spirituality of the<br />
Goddess could not be totally suppressed. In the<br />
Mediterranean area it manifested in various mystery<br />
traditions, which generally attracted women, slaves,<br />
and other disenfranchised persons. They continued<br />
the ancient fertility and erotic celebrations. Their<br />
often orgiastic ceremonies provided their followers<br />
with actual, liberating transformative encounters with<br />
