Photo: K Bristow A photographic journal will revive the tradition of recording families who plant a tree at Luurnpa Catholic school. The latest chapter which began on Tree Day, 29th July 2005, was a significant event requiring a joint effort with the wider community. Community workers had pre-dug holes and family members joined in to plant a tree in the school grounds. Culture day National Literacy day The whole of school reading session was held outside the store in Balgo on Friday 2nd September 2005 to celebrate National Literacy Day. Students, staff and community members shared the reading of ‘Wombat Stew’. Luurnpa Catholic School students joined with the community at the Culture Centre on Thursday 28th July 2005 for NAIDOC celebrations. Students plaited headbands, made badges and boomerangs and performed traditional dance as can be seen in this photo. It was a great day of cultural celebration with all ages joining together. Photo: K Bristow 18 • KIMBERLEY COMMUNITY PROFILE • OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2005 Mulan Croc Festival By Rachel Smith Students from John Pujajangka-Piyirn School performed at the recent Croc Festival in Halls Creek after a great deal of preparation over the last couple of months. After much liaison between the school and the Community the students performed a mixture of cultural and modern dance. Many of Community members made the 650km round trip to see the children perform and were very proud to see how strongly they danced on the night. Photo: Fr K Matthews The Kimberley Companion was launched in Mulan with Mass celebrated by relief priest, Fr Kevin Matthews and was followed by a smoking ceremony to bless the work of Sr Veronica Ryan.
Kununurra Athletics Carnival By Emma Morrison St Joseph's School, Kununurra held their annual Athletics Carnival on 2nd September. Photo: E Morrison Mangan Music By Emma Morrison Colourful Mural By Emma Morrison Brightly painted turtles, lilies, horses and mountains are the latest creations by the young artists at St Joseph’s Catholic School in Kununurra. The children are painting a 5 metre tile mural depicting a map of Kununurra, as seen through their eyes. Entitled “Our Town”, the mural is made from 156 tiles, each measuring 15 by 20 cm. Visiting ceramic artist Rika Rouw is facilitating the project. When the tiles are completed they will be glaze fired and form a permanent display on a wall at the school. School News Friday morning usually sees the Pre-Primary to Year 7 students at St Joseph’s School, Kununurra come together for hymn singing but on Friday August 19th the session took on a very different format. The students together with children from St Joseph’s School in Wyndham were fortunate to have an extra long session led by Australian singer/song writer, Michael Mangan. After spending some time in Darwin and on his way through to the Mirrilingki Spirituality Centre at Warmun, Michael stopped off at St Joseph’s to take the students through Jesus’ story with the help of song and actions. It was a wonderful opportunity for the students to meet such a talented musician whose life has revolved around writing and singing about our God. Michael Mangan inspires young singers in Kununurra. Red Hill Alabama Slammer Basketballer, James Crawford, the “Alabama Slammer” visited Red Hill where the children were all too eager to be instructed in the techniques that have made him such a successful basketballer. Photo: E Morrison Play Safe in the Sun As well as being great fun the Croc Festival, which was held at Halls Creek this year, was also informative for children from Warlawurru Catholic school at Red Hill.
