Freshman Phenom Wrestler competes
at State Tournament
This year’s wrestling season finished
with a bang for the Eagles. The team
took home the GCL North title, and then
competed in a very successful postseason.
Freshman Lyle Plummer, sophomores Justin
Morninwheg and Tommy Redinger,
and seniors Nick Muhl and Josh Marshall
all qualified for the District tournament by
placing in the top four in their weight classes
at sectionals.
Districts continued to be a success
for the Eagles. While Marshall was unable to
compete due to sickness, Plummer and Muhl
drove to the second day of the tournament.
Two-time district qualifier Muhl fell short on
qualifying for State, but it was the freshman
103 pounder, Plummer, who punched his
ticket to the State tournament.
Plummer, is the first wrestler to
qualify for the State tournament for CJ since
Terry Stevenson ’07. “It felt great to qualify
for State. It took a lot of time, effort, and
determination,” said Plummer. He went 1-2
at the State tournament, one match away
from placing in the top eight in the State.
“I wish I could have done better [at state],
but now that I have this experience under
my belt, I know what it’s going to take to become
a state champion next year. The team
did great this year, with help especially from
our senior leadership, and new coaches Tim
Begley and Phil Plummer. We showed a lot
of heart.”
Lady Eagles Basketball, the Comeback
Queens
You can never count out the Lady
Eagles basketball team in any game, no matter
how dull the scoreboard may look. Twice
this postseason the Eagles have made fourth
quarter comebacks to keep their State Tournament
hopes alive.
The Eagles easily handled their
The CJ Quiz Bowl Team shot out of the
gates at full speed, this year. The team qualified
for the State tournament by winning the GCAL
Fall Tournament – the first competition of the
year. The varsity team finished the regular season
at 10-1, failing to top last year’s perfect record of
10-0. They rampaged through the GCAL, winning
the league for the fifth time in as many years. The
first two opponents Valley
View and Thurgood
Marshall, winning both
games by large point margins.
However, the Eagles
were then faced with
two teams in Bellbrook
and Wyoming, who had
a combined five losses
all season between them.
“We always have the determination
to never back
down and always fight
back, despite what the
scoreboard says,” said
Duffy.
The Eagles
advanced to the District
finals where they faced
a tough Wyoming team.
Another victory in dramatic
overtime fashion,
the Eagles overcame a
14-point deficit with six
minutes left to defeat Wyoming in overtime.
Junior Simonne Gage’s clutch shot at
the end of the fourth quarter tied the game
up and sent it into overtime. “This is what
we’ve done all tournament,” says Duffy,
“Hopefully we continue this run all the way
to the State Tournament.”
The Eagles then took on the Alter
Knights in the Regional semi-finals, the third
time the teams have faced each other this
year. The Eagles made another comeback,
after being down 22-21 at the half. The Lady
Eagles played a great, controlled second
half and defeated the Knights in convincing
fashion 50-42. Gage led the team with 14
points, junior Raytea Long had a powerful
inside game with 11 points.
Unfortunately, the Lady Eagles
were upended by Carroll in the regional finals,
40-35.
GCAL romp included a decisive victory over the
Alter Knights by the score of 54-3.
The varsity squad features juniors John
Manovich, John Chick, and Arthur Siwecki along
with seniors Raymmond Hall, Giles Hinders, and
John Henry Hinders. “Everyone earned their spot
on the team and everyone brings something different
to the table,” says junior John Chick. The
team is powerful year after year. Says senior Giles
Hinders on the team’s annual domination, “Most
varsity members have had a few years on JV to get
experience, and we go in expecting to win.”
Team member John Manovich said that
the team maintains its usual practice schedule of
two rigorous, morning practices a week in Mr. Sparrow’s
room, where heated games of Jeopardy take
place. They maintain their sharpness for the State
tournament in April.
The team hopes to continue its tradition
of winning, and carry that momentum all the way
to the State Championship.
