Introduction<br />
6<br />
This important effort, <strong>in</strong> which five different<br />
countries undertook very similar surveys among<br />
comparable formal-sector women bus<strong>in</strong>ess owner<br />
populations <strong>in</strong> a concurrent period of time,<br />
provides new detailed <strong>in</strong>formation on <strong>the</strong> outlook<br />
of women bus<strong>in</strong>ess owners <strong>in</strong> each country. It<br />
showcases <strong>the</strong>ir sentiments about <strong>the</strong> growth <strong>and</strong><br />
development of <strong>the</strong>ir firms, <strong>the</strong> issue challenges<br />
<strong>the</strong>y are fac<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir views about what it is<br />
like be<strong>in</strong>g a woman bus<strong>in</strong>ess owner <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
country. The study does not, however, purport to<br />
represent <strong>the</strong> views of all women entrepreneurs <strong>in</strong><br />
each country, nor is <strong>the</strong>re an ability – at this stage<br />
– of compar<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> responses of women bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />
owners to those of <strong>the</strong>ir male counterparts.<br />
A unique value of this project, however, is <strong>the</strong><br />
ability to compare <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs across countries.<br />
While women bus<strong>in</strong>ess owners <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se countries<br />
share many of <strong>the</strong> same sentiments <strong>and</strong><br />
characteristics, <strong>the</strong>re are <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g differences<br />
among <strong>the</strong>m as well.<br />
The first ma<strong>in</strong> section of this report does just that<br />
– looks at <strong>the</strong> five surveys toge<strong>the</strong>r, compar<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>and</strong> contrast<strong>in</strong>g results, draw<strong>in</strong>g conclusions, <strong>and</strong><br />
mak<strong>in</strong>g recommendations for consideration by<br />
policy makers, corporate <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitutional leaders,<br />
<strong>and</strong> members of <strong>the</strong> women’s bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />
community.<br />
Follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> body of this report are<br />
executive reports for each of <strong>the</strong> five countries,<br />
prepared by <strong>the</strong> country study teams. Next, an<br />
Acknowledgements section highlights all of <strong>the</strong><br />
organizations <strong>and</strong> people <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> this study. A<br />
section conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> survey <strong>in</strong>strument used by<br />
each team, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> top-l<strong>in</strong>e results for every<br />
question asked, follows. The report concludes with<br />
a list of reference publications of <strong>in</strong>terest, <strong>and</strong> a list<br />
of l<strong>in</strong>ks to organizations support<strong>in</strong>g women’s<br />
enterprise development <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> five countries.<br />
Included <strong>in</strong> this report as well are brief profiles of<br />
women bus<strong>in</strong>ess owners, which add richness <strong>and</strong><br />
qualitative, first-person stories to <strong>the</strong> quantitative<br />
nature of <strong>the</strong> survey data. These profiles were<br />
prepared from a number of personal <strong>in</strong>terviews<br />
conducted dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> course of <strong>the</strong> project.<br />
<strong>Women</strong> <strong>Entrepreneurs</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Middle</strong> <strong>East</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>North</strong> <strong>Africa</strong>:<br />
Characteristics, Contributions <strong>and</strong> Challenges<br />
It is hoped that this effort, <strong>and</strong> especially <strong>the</strong><br />
regional <strong>and</strong> country-specific analyses conta<strong>in</strong>ed<br />
here<strong>in</strong>, will spur <strong>in</strong>creased <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> women’s<br />
entrepreneurship throughout <strong>the</strong> region, be of<br />
value to those <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> women’s enterprise<br />
development around <strong>the</strong> world, <strong>and</strong> spark more<br />
detailed research – <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g comparisons<br />
between women <strong>and</strong> men – <strong>and</strong> additional<br />
collaborative efforts of this type <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
countries.<br />
This project would not have succeeded without<br />
<strong>the</strong> passion <strong>and</strong> commitment of a large number of<br />
<strong>in</strong>dividuals <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitutions, who are listed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Acknowledgements section toward <strong>the</strong> end of this<br />
report. The IFC <strong>and</strong> <strong>CAWTAR</strong> would like to<br />
s<strong>in</strong>cerely thank <strong>the</strong>m for <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>volvement <strong>in</strong> this<br />
important <strong>and</strong> unique effort.
