Lieutenant-Colonel, —; taken prisoner at Quebec, 31st December, 1775; Colonel 1st<br />

Rhode Island, 27th February, 1777, to rank from 1st January, 1777. By <strong>the</strong> Act <strong>of</strong> 4th<br />

November, 1777, it was "Resolved, that Congress have a high sense <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> merit <strong>of</strong><br />

Colonel Greene, and <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficers and men under his command, in <strong>the</strong>ir late gallant<br />

defence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fort at Red Bank, on <strong>the</strong> Delaware River, and that an elegant sword be<br />

provided by <strong>the</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> War and presented to Colonel Greene." Killed 14th May,<br />

1781, by Delancey's Tories in Westchester County, New York.<br />

magnanimous conduct in <strong>the</strong> action <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 8th <strong>of</strong> September last, near <strong>the</strong> Eutaw<br />

Springs, in South Carolina, in which, with a force inferior in number to that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

enemy, he obtained a most signal victory * * * that a British stand <strong>of</strong> colors be<br />

presented to Major-General Greene as an honorable testimony <strong>of</strong> his merit, and a<br />

golden medal emblematical <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> battle and victory aforesaid."<br />
