Once the statue for the Temple of Apollo Patroos was completed, the<br />
casting pit was no longer needed, and the workmen threw the debris back<br />
inside, including the furnace material, and then refilled the pit. Their refuse<br />
provides a record of the casting of the statue and gives a good idea of its<br />
appearance. The statue itself, a simple kouros or nude youth of the com-<br />
mon 6th-century Apolline type known from works in stone, is unfortu-<br />
nately not preserved; it may have been destroyed during the Persian sack of<br />
Athens in 480 B.C.
