Delmark Doings
We're all smiles at Delmark with the arrival of our blues releases, including our 1st blues DVDs!
The most anticipated release is from one of the true legends of Chicago electric blues, OTIS
RUSH. The riveting live performance is from 1976 at the Wise Fools Pub, originally broadcast on
WXRT. Believe it or not, this CD is the first complete document of Otis recorded live in Chicago.
The raw & gritty blues of TAIL DRAGGER was captured live this summer on Chicago's west side.
The DVD takes you right into Vern & Garland's Friendly Lounge, where the unforgettable Tail
Dragger prowls through the appreciative neighborhood crowd, singin' his low down blues. The all
star band features Billy Branch, Lurrie Bell, Bob Stroger and guest Jimmy Dawkins. Check out
Dawkins & Stroger in December's Chicago magazine for a beautiful photo shoot on legends of
Chicago blues.
For our 2nd blues DVD (also on CD) we had the pleasure of recording MISSISSIPPI HEAT live
at Rosa's Lounge in Chicago. This popular Chicago band is led by harp player & composer,
Pierre Lacocque. The powerful vocals of Inetta Visor and the intense guitar work and vocals of
Lurrie Bell are featured throughout.
On ZORA YOUNG's second studio outing on Delmark, she continues to floor us with her warm
and sensual vocals, along with her diverse repertoire. Her band is led byveteran guitarist Pete
Allen, a talent deserving much more recognition.
Tasteful guitarist Dave Specter recently returned home from a successful multi-date tour in
England, and then flew back to Europe for some dates in Switzerland with Bay Area guitarist
Steve Freund. Specter will return to Europe in 2006 for some dates in Ireland and Scotland.
The hard working Jimmy Burns and Byther Smith have been busy in Chicago and on the road,
with many well received shows out west and Canada. Big Time Sarah toured Russia with Magic
Slim, and soulful Syl Johnson traveled all through Turkey. Don't forget to catch funky Michael
Coleman in his many Chicago and Wisconsin gigs. Shirley Johnson still holds court at Blue
Chicago. Despite his recent bout with cancer, Willie Kent, hasn't slowed down at all, still busy
with his weekly gigs in town with Bonnie Lee.
<strong>Jazz</strong> guitar virtuoso Bobby Broom just returned from a tour in Japan with sax legend Sonny
Rollins, and is also featured on the cover of the Nov/Dec issue of Chicago <strong>Jazz</strong> Magazine. The
Deep Blue Organ Trio is still heatin' up the Green Mill every Tuesday, while Frank Catalano
blows there late night on Wednesdays. You can catch the intense pianist/synthesist Jim Baker at
Hotti Biscotti every Tuesday evening, featured in a recent review in the Chicago Sun-Times.
Common Ground's Zach Brock has been busy with his own gigs around town, as well as many
high profile special guest stints featuring his electric violin.
For weekly nights of improvised jazz in Chicago, often featuring Delmark artists, don't forget
about Sunday nights at The Hungry Brain, Monday nights at Silvie's, Tuesday nights at The Empty
Bottle, The Hot House, etc. South side institutions New Apartment Lounge with Von Freeman,
and Fred Anderson's Velvet Lounge are still going strong.
Kalaparush Maurice McIntyre & the Light will tour Israel in 2006, and Chicago Luzern
Exchange just confirmed January dates in Switzerland, Germany, and Austria. Ari Brown had
rave reviews from his recent weekend at the Green Mill. Malachi Thompson is keeping busy
with many high profile gigs, as well as with his Sutherland Community Arts Initiative in
Bronzeville.
Bob & Sue Koester recently returned from a wonderful trip to Bordeaux (their first time back to
France since their honeymoon) as guests of the “Chicago Is Now” Festival with Kahil El'Zabar &
the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble with Archie Shepp. Kahil 's Ritual Trio will be at Sonotheque on
Dec. 1st, and EHE will be on tour in February to celebrate Black History Month.
Look forward to more live DVD/CD releases from Delmark in 2006. Deep Blue Organ Trio at The
Green Mill, and a Velvet Lounge series with Fred Anderson, Harrison Bankhead, and Hamid
Drake on one set, and Ernest Dawkins' New Horizons Ensemble with Maurice Brown on
another. More to follow…
Our RIVERSIDE STUDIO has been busy with a long booking by Chris Harper, a blues harmonica
player from Switzerland with Italy’s Sharade Band. <strong>Jazz</strong> trumpeters Malachi Thompson & Yves
Francois have also been doing some recording.
With the recent closings of Southport and Soto studios it looks like Riverside will continue to be
busy as ever (but we’ll always try to acoomodate a rental!). We are updating out computer and
software to become able to handle the High Definition and Surround Sound work more easily.
We hope you have a healthy, safe, and peaceful holiday season. - Kevin Johnson
