School Scholarships: School studentships covering living expenses and fees at the UK
level are open to all applicants. However, we have a very small number of these
studentships and they will only be awarded to exceptional applicants who have
the equivalent of a First Class Honours degree. Students from overseas must have
additional funding to cover the overseas fee. Some overseas students may be eligible
for SORSAS funding (see below) that pays the difference between the UK and the
overseas fee.
Scottish Overseas Research Students Awards Scheme (SORSAS): Provides funding
to help outstanding full time postgraduate research students from outside the UK
and European Union. Each award covers the difference between the Overseas rate
of tuition fee and the Home (UK/EU) rate of tuition fee charged by the University.
SORSAS awards do not cover the Home/EU fee element, maintenance or travel
expenses. To be eligible for an SORSAS award, you must be liable for overseas tuition
fees and you must be able to demonstrate outstanding merit and research potential.
Applicants should apply separately for a research place at the University before
applying for this award. Candidates who are successful in obtaining an SORSAS award
may be eligible to receive an additional scholarship from the University of St Andrews
to cover the Home (UK/EU) rate of tuition fees and a contribution towards living costs.
To be considered for the Home fee waiver and maintenance stipend, you will be
required to supply an additional statement on the application form providing details
of your financial situation and your need for this extra funding. The awards may be
held in any field of study. The only criteria for these awards are academic excellence
and research potential. The scheme is administered by the University. The deadline is

Targeted Funding: From time to time the School obtains funding for PhD studentships
for targeted pieces of research. Such opportunities are usually advertised. For
outstanding students with relevant backgrounds, members of staff occasionally
obtain funding specifically for them and their research interests. Students should
contact the member of staff they wish to work with to discuss the possibilities.
