Saturday, December 3rd , is almost here!
Shepherd's Christmas in Gazebo Park will be
the perfect place to be this year. Now that the
Burn Ban has finally ended, (Have we ever been so grateful for rain?)
we will be having our Firework display after the Concert at the High
School. This is the July 4th firework display we couldn't have then!
The theme this year is Christmas Treasure. If you want to dress up for
the day in costume, please do!
Starting at noon, vendors will be selling their goods in the park. Want
to be a vendor? If you are a non-profit organization, the cost is $5 for
a booth. All others are $10. Call 936-628-3890 for more information
and an application.
The parade starts at 6.30 PM. Judging will be earlier, as usual, and
there is no charge for entering. Janet Yarborough is our driver for our
Grand Marshals. One of them is Janet's mom, who is 90 years old. She
was serving as a nurse at Pearl Harbor. She is joined by George Radney,
also a veteran of WW 2, the last living cavalryman of his troop.
The route will be different from last year. To make it easier for the
floats to maneuver, the route will be straight from the Baptist parking
lot, across the rail road tracks to the four corners, then it will turn right
on Loop 242 ending at the High School. Remember to bring your folding
chairs, so you can enjoy the concert and then the fireworks!
We have an Antique Tractor display and the Cowboy Church are
bringing their Bucking Bull. The Senior Center is cooking Chicken
and Dumplings. The Fire Dept will also be selling food and the library
will be having an open day with refreshments available. Shepherd Library
will be having a fund raiser at the same time, so please drop by
to enjoy. The mules, Rhett and Butler, will be there to give rides and
we have vendors selling jewelry and candy and more.
The Tree lighting will be at 6 PM and we will have lots of entertainment,
including favorites from last year and some new additions to the
program. One of these is the Jazz Band from Shepherd, headed by our
musical Mr. Wilson. We will have the High School Band, of course,
and lots of other musical entertainment. Santa will be there, happy to
share photo opportunities in the Gazebo.
If you want to enter the competition for “Best Decorated House” or
“Best Decorated Business”, you will need to fill out an application. You
can call the Chamber number above or call in at the Precinct 2 Annex
and get one from Betty Greenhouse. In the Best House category, 1st
prize is $100, 2nd is $50 and 3rd wins $25. In the Business category,
plaques will be awarded. Join in this effort to make this Christmas a truly
happy and blessed event, where community spirit connects everyone.

It’s the HSPCA Winter Camp 2011
Love animals? Want to spend time with them?
Want to learn more about them? This is the camp for you!
WHO: For kids ages 8-12
WHAT: 2 full weeks of Critter Camp at the Houston SPCA! You can
sign up for one or more days or sign up by the week!
WHEN: Dec. 19-23 and also Dec. 26-30. from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm
daily. (Sorry, we do not offer before- or after-camp care.)
WHERE: Houston SPCA Annex (not the shelter bldg) at 7007 Katy
Rd, Houston, TX 77024.
What will we do? Each day we will:
• Spend hands-on time with our shelter dogs, cats and farm animals.
• Learn fun and new facts about our favorite friends, the animals.
• Enjoy a different experience each day--but it’s always about the animals!!
• Participate with animal-themed crafts, activities and games.
• Make new friends who love what you love—the animals, of course!
Early Bird Special:
Daily: $75.00 per day, per camper, through 11/26
Weekly: $350 per week through 11/26
Rates after 11/26:
Daily: $80 per day per camper
Weekly: $375 per week
Fee includes all craft materials, afternoon snack and drink. Campers

Kathy Diana Newsom
September 3, 1954 – November 13, 2011
Kathy Diana Newsom, age 57, of Shepherd, Texas, passed away
Sunday, November 13, 2011 at her residence.
She was born on September 3, 1954. She weighed only two pounds.
The doctor said she would never make it and sent her home to die. She
did survive and went on to lead an extraordinary
life. She raised 3 kids; Laura Marie Harris, Diana
Marie Dyer, and Misty Kavett Dyer and husband,
Kurt Riley –with the exception of special daughter,
Virginia Hillhouse. She was the second oldest of
five kids from Ruthie Atchley. Brothers and sisters
include David Richardson, Calvin Richardson,
Vanessa (Hoss), and Janice Stowe.
She is preceded in death by her grandfather,
Hoyle Moore and her good friend, Dr. Pat McMurrey. She will be remembered
lovingly by her mother, Ruth Atchley and husband, Don;
father, Robert Lee Richardson; grandchildren, Lexton, Nacole, Kaitlyn,
Laken, Jordan, Brayden, Kayla, Ciara, and one on the way; greatgrandchild,
Addison Harbour; special friend, Gale Evans; friends,
Wallace Hooper, Aunt Sue, and Victor Greene; numerous nieces, nephews,
cousins, and other cherished family members and faithful friends.
Rev. Richard Fontennette of Lake Station Baptist Church presided
over graveside services held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, November 18, 2011
at Farley Chapel Cemetery, Shepherd, Texas. Pallbearers included Kurt
Riley, Gale Evans, David Richardson, Don Atchley, Calvin Richardson,
and Charles Jones; honorary pallbearer included Wallace Hooper.
May you rest in peace and sing with the Angels. We love you momma.
Bacon, Egg, & Cheese Wreath
Ingredients:
1 can of crescents, 8 count
5 large eggs
1 cup of shredded cheese (any cheese will work)
8 slices of fully cooked bacon
Salsa (optional)
Directions:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Scramble eggs on stove top.
Lay out crescents on a parchment
lined pizza pan like an 8-point
star (as shown). Lay one piece
of cooked bacon onto each crescent.
Add about 1/3 cup of cheese
in a circle around the bottom,
then the eggs, then more cheese.
Next, fold the ends of the crescents
over the top of the eggs
and sprinkle with the rest of the
cheese. Bake for about 17 minutes
or until crescents are golden brown. Can be served with salsa.
Snickerdoodle Muffins
Ingredients:
2 sticks unsalted butter
1 cup sugar
2 tsp vanilla
2 eggs
¾ tsp baking soda
¾ tsp baking powder
¾ tsp cream of tartar
¾ tsp freshly grated nutmeg
1 and ¼ cup sour cream
2 and ¼ cups all purpose flour
1 cup sugar and 2 TBS cinnamon
mixed together for
rolling
Directions:
Cream the butter and sugar
until soft about 3 to 5 minutes. Add in the vanilla. Add in the eggs one
at a time and mix until each is incorporated.
In a separate, mix together the flour, baking soda, and baking powder
and cream of tarter.
Add the flour mixture and the sour cream alternately to the egg-butter
mixture in the additions. Start with the flour and end with the flour.
Scrape the bowl occasionally.
Using an ice cream scoop, scoop out muffin batter one at a time and
drop into a shallow bowl filled with the cinnamon sugar mixture. Roll
the muffin around in the mixture until it is covered completely in cinnamon
sugar.. Place muffin into a greased muffin tin.. Depending on the
size of your tins, you should get about 12 to 14 muffins. Bake them for
approx. 20-22 minutes in a 350F oven or until they are golden brown.
