1.30pm The evolution of Mickey Mouse<br />

Eighty years after his debut in Steamboat Willie,<br />
Mickey Mouse remains <strong>the</strong> most famous and<br />
immediately recognisable character in cartoon<br />
history. But over <strong>the</strong> decades, as <strong>the</strong>ir skill and<br />
artistry grew, <strong>the</strong> Disney animators altered Mickey's<br />
design, anatomy and style of animation. The<br />
changes Mickey Mouse underwent encapsulate<br />
<strong>the</strong> evolution of American animation, especially<br />
during <strong>the</strong> ‘Golden Age’ of <strong>the</strong> 1930's. Animation<br />
historian Charles Solomon traces <strong>the</strong> growth of<br />
Mickey from <strong>the</strong> rubbery golliwog in Plane Crazy<br />
to <strong>the</strong> mischievous charmer in The Sorcerer's<br />
Apprentice to <strong>the</strong> suburban Everymouse of <strong>the</strong><br />
1950s.<br />
2.15pm From 2D to 3D and Back Again<br />
Scott F Johnston, President,<br />
Fleeting Image Animation Inc.<br />
Scott’s resume lists his work on movies like The Iron<br />
Giant, The Lion King and Beauty and <strong>the</strong> Beast<br />
amongst many o<strong>the</strong>rs. In this talk Scott will highlight<br />
his experience on <strong>the</strong>se films in relation to his<br />
specific area of expertise, integrating 2D and 3D.<br />
He will also investigate <strong>the</strong> technical and artistic<br />
issues of integrating technology and discuss where<br />
<strong>the</strong> industry is going with 2D and 3D production.<br />

3.15pm The Biology of Bolt<br />
Professor Stuart Sumida,<br />
California State University<br />
Stuart gives <strong>Animex</strong> '09 attendees an inside look<br />
at <strong>the</strong> process of training animators, riggers and<br />
modelers about <strong>the</strong> construction and movement of<br />
<strong>the</strong> main characters for <strong>the</strong> Disney Feature Animation<br />
film Bolt.<br />
He will relate <strong>the</strong> process of immersing <strong>the</strong> studio<br />
artists in <strong>the</strong> nuances of <strong>the</strong> differences in locomotion<br />
between Bolt - a dog, Mittens - a cat, and Rhino - a<br />
hamster, and he'll describe how locomotor reference<br />
studies evolved as <strong>the</strong> character design of Bolt<br />
changed during <strong>the</strong> course of production.<br />
4.00pm The Creation of Characters<br />
Mark Empey, Disney Feature Animation<br />
Described as “<strong>the</strong> most entertaining and well-crafted<br />
Disney Animation movie in years”, Bolt is Disney<br />
Feature Animation’s first feature film release since<br />
<strong>the</strong> company’s acquisition of Pixar.<br />
Mark comes to <strong>Animex</strong> to give an overview of <strong>the</strong><br />
many cool characters created for <strong>the</strong> movie.<br />
