Hamlet Introduction
Scholarly research has determined that Hamlet was likely written in
1600. This is an intensely complex psychological play in which the tragic
hero Hamlet is riddled by chronic melancholy. He is sickened by the
death of his father, the King of Denmark, and the rapid remarriage of his
mother to his father’s brother. Hamlet has suffered in a limbo of inaction
since the suspicious death of his father, and when urged by his father’s
ghost to avenge him, Hamlet descends into hopeless madness.
