For the number of drag<strong>on</strong>fly species, Italy represents <strong>on</strong>e of the richest countries in the<br />
mediterranean basin. However, the number of drag<strong>on</strong>fly experts <strong>and</strong> volunteers is rather low <strong>and</strong> the<br />
efforts for the protecti<strong>on</strong> of this insect group is currently not high <strong>on</strong> the nati<strong>on</strong>al agenda of<br />
c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong> priorities.<br />
From the year 2006 <strong>on</strong>wards the od<strong>on</strong>atology in Italy has progressed in leaps <strong>and</strong> bounds because a<br />
group of people, working as volunteers, increased the exchange of informati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> the Od<strong>on</strong>ata of<br />
Italy <strong>and</strong> actively promoted this subject. In the year 2009 these efforts resulted in the birth of the<br />
“Italian od<strong>on</strong>atologcal society”, named ODONATA.IT. This new <strong>and</strong> active society has a number of<br />
aims <strong>and</strong> projects which are discussed.<br />
