Harford Habitat for Humanity and
Habitat for Humanity of Cecil County have
merged. We are honored and humbled
to be serving Cecil County residents, and
we are proud to announce our new name:
Habitat for Humanity Susquehanna.
While I was initially excited about our
new name, I was also a little apprehensive
about giving up our well-known name:
Harford Habitat for Humanity. A group
of outstanding leaders from APGFCU, for
whom I have great respect, gave birth
to the affiliate in 1993, and the Harford
County community embraced it with open arms. Our
founders and other dedicated volunteers, staff and
board members worked hard over the years to grow
the organization, and Harford Habitat became a highly
respected nonprofit.
But we learned quickly that our founders are proud
of our growth, as it was their intent in 1993 to be the
hands and feet of Jesus. They know that He crossed
borders to reach others and we, too, are called to do
the same. Our community hasn’t forgotten who we are
because of the great Habitat brand worldwide. And
just as importantly, the wonderful people we have met
in Cecil County are embracing Habitat for Humanity
Susquehanna with open arms! We thank God for
Have you heard
the good news?
making this opportunity possible, and we can’t wait to
see what He has in store for us in Cecil County.
When we set goals for FY11, we didn’t anticipate
a merger, but we planned to serve more families than
ever. In FY10, we served 31 families and 65 people
through our homeownership and repair programs. In
FY11, we surpassed our goals! We served a total of 58
families and 113 people this year.
These accomplishments, and others outlined in
this annual report, are yours! We are a grassroots
organization, raising funds and building houses with local
support, donors and great community partnerships. If
you swung a hammer at one of our homes, volunteered
on a committee, on our board or in our office, you put
your faith into action. If you donated a car, materials or
services, wrote a check, attended an event or donated
stock, you helped us build it!
And do you know what I hear every time I say
thank you to folks for supporting us? I’m told, “I’m
blessed to be able to give my time and money,” or “We
are supposed to give back to others,” or “Thank you for
getting me involved.” These humble words continue to
inspire me and my staff every day as we do this work.
From all of us at Habitat for Humanity Susquehanna -
thank you for following that second commandment to
“love your neighbor as yourself.”
-- Joann Blewett, Executive Director
Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your
heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This
is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is
like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and
the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Matthew 22:37-40
