Dear Alumni and Friends, cont. Duwane Miller just retired this spring after teaching and/or coaching at KMC for 31 years. And, Rod Browning – Activities Director and Head Girls Basketball coach, Liana Torkelson – Guidance Counselor, and Shirley Sharma – Media Specialist have all invested more than 15 years each in Diocesan educational positions. Our current teachers who are alumni of Kapaun Mt. Carmel are: Chris Bloomer '90 Crista Kouba '85 Burnett Sr. Mary Ann (Joni) Kirkland '75 Fr. David Marstall '96 Ashley Perkins '99 David Roberts '84 Fr. Jim Weldon '90 All of these teachers as well as many others have made huge sacrifices and significant commitments in order to "educate and form the total person in the image of Jesus Christ." We are blessed to have such a high-quality, dedicated staff of professionals working with our young people, who will be the ultimate beneficiaries of their expertise and caring. Mike Burrus, President Dear Parents and Other Friends of Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School, I am proud to inform you that our Director of Development, Mike Wescott, has been named Diocesan Director of Development and Planned Giving. He will begin his new responsibilities at the Chancery Office on August 1. In the meantime, he will be working with me to find his replacement at KMC, and to help ensure a smooth transition for our new Director of Development, while continuing to oversee day-to-day operations of the Development Office downtown. He has also committed to spend significant time at the school during the first few weeks that his replacement is on the job. Mike’s many contributions to the recent resurgence in the stature and success of Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School are too numerous to list. Though he did not graduate from KMC, he truly has the heart of a Crusader. He has been a wonderful ambassador in working with our students, faculty, parents, alumni and other friends of the school. There is no one who has internalized more deeply our mission “to educate and form the total person in the image of Jesus Christ” than Mike has, and his dedication has been contagious. We will miss Mike – his smile, laughter, dedication, leadership, effectiveness, friendship and his Catholicity. Please join me in congratulating Mike, in wishing him well, and in discouraging him from becoming a stranger at KMC. 2 your your school school today today 2003-04 Highlights of Accomplishments • Two KMC alums, Ben Shockey '88 and David Marstall '96 were ordained to the priesthood on May 29. • Our Science Olympiad team won the state championship for the 2nd consecutive year and for the 3rd time in the past four years, and placed 17th in the nation. • Several of our students received high recognition at state music competition, and our drama and music departments performed numerous, outstanding plays and concerts. • Our Journalism program won its ninth state championship in the past ten years, and numerous prestigious national and state awards, as well. • There were numerous successes on the athletic fields, highlighted by: • City League championships in girls golf, cross country, track and soccer; • State championships in girls cross country and boys golf, along with various other teams advancing to state competition; • Numerous students winning recognition on All City and All State teams, or placing in individual events at state competitions. • Our senior class had four National Merit Finalists and two National Merit Commended Scholars. Seven of our seniors applied to and were accepted by the University of Notre Dame, and six of them will be attending there this fall. • 94% of this year's graduates plan to attend college this fall, with another 4% entering military service. • Thirteen of our seniors received Cum Laude diplomas as members of the second class for whom the Cum Laude program was available. • The school was awarded Standards of Excellence in reading, science and social studies by virtue of our students' success on state assessments. Our performances rank in the top 14% for reading, the top 12% in science and the top 11% in social studies among all high schools in Kansas. Fewer than 6% of the high schools in the State of Kansas received three or more Standards of Excellence. • We were recently notified that our scores for the state assessments that were taken last spring will result in the school also being awarded a Standard of Excellence in Math. • Duwane Miller retired from Kapaun Mt. Carmel after 31 years of wonderful service as a teacher and coach. He was honored by the KMC Parents Club as Veteran Teacher of the Year, while Ben Sperry received recognition as New Teacher of the Year and Gary Heath, our Facilities Manager, was named Support Staff Member of the Year. Dallas Gathering alumni alumni gather gatherings gather ings Thanks to everyone for the tremendous welcome we received in Phoenix and Dallas this past spring. What a wonderful turnout! We are currently making plans for our visits in 2005 - maybe to a city near you. Here are just a few pictures of those who attended. Sister John Ellen Garrity, BVM I recently spoke with Sister John Ellen from her home at Wright Hall, across the street from Loyola University in Chicago, IL. After leaving KMC at the conclusion of the 1994 school year, Sister went to care for her blood sister who has Alzheimer's. Occasionally, she does some substitute teaching, but primarily does volunteer work with Alzheimer's patients or babysitting children whose parents are attending Al-Anon classes. She has very fond memories of her 14 years at KMC and vividly recalls teaching her World History class songs from WWII. James Reinert, SJ For those men who graduated from Chaplain Kapaun Memorial High School between 1959 and 1966, Fr. James Reinert was a familiar face in the Principal's office, where he served. For the next 7 years, he served in various capacities in the Provincial Office for the Jesuits until he was moved to a position where he found deep personal satisfaction. He was the hospital Chaplain at Harry S. Truman Hospital, Cardinal Glennon Childrens' Hospital and Bethesda Hospital. "He had a gift of compassion with parents suffering in and through their children that will be gratefully recounted by those parents for years to come", writes Gerald Sheahan, S.J., a fellow Jesuit. Father Reinert died from massive heart failure while driving home from a Cardinals' baseball game on July 6, 1987. Sister John Ellen Garrity Fr. Inc. to publish a directory of all alumni from Mount Carmel Academy, Chaplain Kapaun Memorial High School and Kapaun Mount Carmel Catholic High School. You will soon be contacted by a representative of the company to update your information and to inquire as to your interest in purchasing a directory. The last time an alumni directory was published was 1995. Please feel comfortable in sharing the information they request.
