A petrified human form was found in
Pennsylvania the other day, one thousand feet
under the ground. Sometimes it is found
necessary to buy book agents as deep as that,
but as a general thing seven hundred feet is
deep enough.
The official investigation into the conduct of
the Jcannette exploring expedition promises to
disclose a great deal of unfriendly feeling, and
jealousy among tbe officers. Jerome J. Collins,
die Herald correspondent, is reported to baTe
No city now in cxistenco has met with
greater vicissitude than Alexandria. At one
time, in the days of its greatest splendour, it
contained 600,000 people. This population bad
dwindled down in the beginningof this century
to 0,000, and.thcy are about as wretched and
impoverished a people as ever survived the ruin
of a great city. In 1625 tbo population had
increased to 16,000, in 1810 to C0,000, in 1871
to 210,602, and in 1681 the number was esti-
mated at 270,000.
A " Green Ilibbon" army, composed of all
members of Eoman Cathclic temperance organ-
about to be formed, tbe distinguishing badge
being a bit of green ribbon worn at the button-bol- e,
just as the blue is displayed by members
of the. "Bine IUbbon" army. The "Green
Bibbon" army, it is stated, is to be in no way,
directly or indirectly, associated with politics,
its sole motto being, "Total abstinence from
intoxicating drink. '
A locaLJink between the names of Sir Walter
Only once in life did tho two meet in person
in tho house of the historian Ferguson, in
Edinburgh. Until lately that houso remained
the finest in its ncigbtarbood. But now tho
gardenias been built upon, the bouse itself
subdivided into workiogmcu's apartments, and
soon the structure will be entirely removed,
tbe place rebuilt upon, and, perhaps, the fact
of its historic interest bs forgotten.
Whether or not Hayes "builded
better than be knew," when he bought his big
Dakota farm, it seems to be pretty well settled
that be selected about the choicest piece of land
in tbe Territory, both as regards tbe land itself
and its location. It lies in tbe uorthern portion
Burleigh Count six miles from Bismarck,
on the line of tbe Northern Pacific Railroad.
Tbo soil is a dark loam, with some sand, giv-
ing it such warmth as to enable crops to be
planted two weeks earlier than in other parts
oi the Territory. Mr. Hayes had this year S20
acres in wheat, the yield of which is reported
to be very satisfactory.
The distribution of the population according
An exhibition of ancient and modern laco
will be held at Brighton, England, during tho
current month, which can hardly fail to prove
veiy interesting. It is expected that tho ex-
hibits will be arranged in chronological order
and classed under the various schools, as Ital-
