celebration that is not to be missed.
The Blue Room starts 2013 by featuring Kerry Strayer

museum’s programming by donating a percentage of every

Smith likes his quotes, but it’s not like he just strings
them together. He finds room for “Over the Rainbow”
in the easy swing of “Bourbon and Coke,” “My Favorite
Things” shows up in “Ray and the Recalcitrant Redhead”
(which sounds like the title of a Perry Mason novel), a
long “Prelude to a Kiss” phrase is in “Coco & Bella,”
and “Eleanor Rigby” is there in “Blues for G.” But that is
hardly all of the Smith style. He is a strong melodist, and
shows it on each of his lengthy turns. I especially like his
work on two tracks with the strongest Grant Green and
Blue Note feel, the Monkish “Cherry Pizza and Pepperoni
Cheesecake” and the tribute to Dr. Goins, “Blues for G.”

Programs – Education Programs
Held the third Tuesday every month in the Blue
Room, Jazz Poetry Jams offer opportunities for aspiring
artists to share their work and gain a better understanding
of the relationship between jazz and the spoken word.
Poetry workshops are also included as part of the program,
guiding students and other artists on a path to finding
their creative voices and developing as professional artists.
Providing free educational access to over 3,000 children
in Kansas City annually, Jazz Storytelling meets
educational standards, introduces children to new music
& cultures, and provides opportunities to enhance their
social skills in a safe environment. Jazz Storytelling is held
the first Tuesday of each month. RSVP is not necessary,
but welcomed, to the attention of the Education Department.

Both benefit from some fine Blakey-like drumming from
Barnes.
The sets only ballad, “Coco & Bella,” is another
favorite. It is about two cats, and the dual melodies
scamper between guitar and bowed bass.
I gather from the notes that Rick plays occasionally
at della Voce in Manhattan. Based on the sounds in Last
Call, this trio would be a good reason to check that out.
Or, maybe we’ll be fortunate and have Rick visit Kansas
City. I’ll spring for the gas.
