The personable, self-effacing Timo Glock is one of several current Formula 1 drivers whose
career at the top level had something of a false dawn. Glock’s came back in 2004, when he was
drafted in by Jordan, for whom he was test driver, when the highly-rated but ultimately
disappointing Giorgio Pantano left.
He made his debut in Montreal and scored points in seventh place, but four Grand Prix starts
were all that materialized. As a result, Glock has been rather overshadowed by big-name
compatriots like the Schumachers, Rosberg and even Hülkenberg.
Glock’s route to Grand Prix racing was via karts, which he started racing in 1997, and then the
German Formula BMW category. He was junior champion in 2001 then senior champion a year
later.
A race-winner in the F3 Euroseries in 2003, Glock learned his craft sufficiently well to earn that
call-up as Jordan’s F1 test driver for 2004. When no full-time drive with Eddie’s team was
offered, he continued the learning process in Champ Cars in the USA before heading back to
Europe and GP2 in 2006.
Switching teams midway through 2006 to iSport, he finished the campaign as one of its frontrunners.
Although he blotted his copybook in 2007 with a high-speed start-line accident in
France, he recovered strongly to claim the title in a nail-biting finish in Valencia.
In 2008 Glock got his second call to F1, and this time he was more than ready. Although Toyota
never became the predicted force, he finished 10 th overall in 2008 and 2009 and scored some
memorable results, two of them in Singapore where he finished fourth in 2008 and claimed an
outstanding podium with second place in 2009.
In 2010 Timo transferred to newcomers Virgin, since rebranded as the Marussia F1 Team, and
is now a veteran of over 80 Grand Prix starts.
Timo Glock’s 2012 statistics:
17 races • 0 wins • 0 pole positions • 0 fastest laps • 0 points
