With the aim to raise awareness on the importance of our kidneys to our overall health and to reduce the impact of the disease and its associated health problems, World Kidney Day started off in year 2006 and has since become an annual celebration globally. This year, the theme for WKD 2012 is “Donate Kidneys for Life Receive” – which focuses on the positive outcome of kidney transplantation and the life-saving aspect of organ donation. The main objectives of WKD 2012 are : - • Raise awareness about our “Amazing Kidneys” WORLD KIDNEY DAY 8 MARCH 2012 • Highlight that diabetes and high blood pressure are key risk factors to Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and its link to cardiovascular diseases • Encourage systematic screening of all patients with diabetes and high blood pressure for CKD • Encourage preventive behaviours • Educate all medical professionals about their key role in detecting and reducing the risk of CKD, particularly in high risk populations • Stress the important role of the government, local and national authorities in taking steps to take action to keep CKD under control with health screening • Encourage “Transplantation” as a best-outcome option for kidney failure, and the act of organ donation as a life saving initiative What we did during the celebration… WKD 2012 Run @ Dataran Merdeka on 4/3/2012 NKF Mobile Health Screening @ NKF Resource Centre on 6/3/2012 Kidney Health Talk @ Resource Centre on 6/3/2012 NKF’s WKD 2012 Convoy also visited Johor Baru, Melaka, Seremban, & Klang Valley from 7/3/2012 to 11/3/2012 for special WKD 2012 Flag-Offs!!
