iowa City area Volunteer Center<br />

The Iowa City Area Volunteer Center opened on June 24,<br />

<strong>2008</strong>, with an Emergency Volunteer Center to coordinate<br />

volunteer flood recovery efforts. As it continues in 2009,<br />

Iowa City Area Volunteer Center will work to connect people<br />

with opportunities to serve, build capacity for effective local<br />

volunteering, promote volunteerism and participate in strategic<br />

initiatives to mobilize volunteers to address community needs.<br />

HealtHy KiDs: sCHool-baseD HealtH CliniCs initiatiVe<br />

Healthy Kids is a collaboration between <strong>United</strong> <strong>Way</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

Johnson County, the Iowa City Community School District,<br />

Mercy Iowa City, The University <strong>of</strong> Iowa Colleges <strong>of</strong> Nursing,<br />

Medicine and Dentistry, University <strong>of</strong> Iowa Hospitals and<br />

Clinics, Johnson County Department <strong>of</strong> Public Health,<br />

Free Medical Clinic, Community Foundation <strong>of</strong> Johnson<br />

County and ACT, Inc. This initiative provides health services<br />

to school-aged children and their younger siblings with<br />

unmet health needs. Currently, clinics are <strong>of</strong>fered two days<br />

a week in east and west Iowa City locations. <strong>United</strong> <strong>Way</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

Johnson County is committed to raising annual operating and<br />

endowment funds for Healthy Kids.<br />

boarD banK<br />

Begun in 2002, Board Bank is a program <strong>of</strong> <strong>United</strong> <strong>Way</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

Johnson County in cooperation with The Larned A. Waterman<br />

Iowa Nonpr<strong>of</strong>it Resource Center <strong>of</strong> the University <strong>of</strong> Iowa<br />

and the Iowa City Area Chamber <strong>of</strong> Commerce Community<br />

Leadership Program. Board Bank provides training and<br />

placement assistance for community volunteers who are<br />

interested in serving on nonpr<strong>of</strong>it boards and also provides<br />

leadership and board development training for nonpr<strong>of</strong>it<br />

agencies. The <strong>United</strong> <strong>Way</strong> Board Bank serves area nonpr<strong>of</strong>its<br />

by creating a pool <strong>of</strong> trained potential board members and<br />

serves the community by promoting volunteerism and<br />

enhancing leadership capacity.<br />

10,000 HoURs sHoW<br />

The 10,000 Hours Show (10K) is a University <strong>of</strong> Iowa student<br />

led organization to engage students in volunteer service that<br />

culminates in a free concert for which the only admission is<br />

10 or more volunteer hours contributed to a local nonpr<strong>of</strong>it<br />

organization…and in 2009, that means receiving a ticket<br />

to see American remix artist, Girl Talk! Last year, student<br />

volunteers provided more than 15,000 hours <strong>of</strong> volunteer<br />

service to our community. For many, this is the beginning <strong>of</strong> a<br />

life-long commitment to volunteerism. As the lead partner in<br />

helping 10K fulfill its mission to meet immediate community<br />

needs and recognizing those who do, the <strong>United</strong> <strong>Way</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

Johnson County is proud <strong>of</strong> its role in developing the next<br />

generation <strong>of</strong> active community leaders.<br />

stuDent uniteD way<br />

Beginning in 2009, the Student <strong>United</strong> <strong>Way</strong> at The University<br />

<strong>of</strong> Iowa will serve the local community by encouraging<br />

students to Give, Advocate and Volunteer in the areas <strong>of</strong><br />

Education, Income, and Health; helping members and other<br />

students grow as leaders and connect to the community; and<br />

building lasting relationships amongst members and with the<br />

<strong>United</strong> <strong>Way</strong> <strong>of</strong> Johnson County and its partner agencies.<br />

uniteD ways <strong>of</strong> iowa<br />

<strong>United</strong> <strong>Way</strong> <strong>of</strong> Johnson County is an active member and<br />

participant in the statewide organization, <strong>United</strong> <strong>Way</strong>s <strong>of</strong><br />

Iowa. <strong>United</strong> <strong>Way</strong>s across Iowa have collectively raised over<br />

$175 million in the past three years to support health and<br />

human services in local communities throughout the state.<br />

<strong>United</strong> <strong>Way</strong>s <strong>of</strong> Iowa is committed to a public policy agenda<br />

in the priority areas <strong>of</strong> education, income and health, as well<br />

as to strengthening the nonpr<strong>of</strong>it sector through volunteer<br />

promotion, tax credits for enhancing charitable giving to<br />

nonpr<strong>of</strong>its, monitoring nonpr<strong>of</strong>it oversight provisions, health<br />

care pooling for Iowa nonpr<strong>of</strong>its and nonpr<strong>of</strong>it disaster<br />

recovery. <strong>United</strong> <strong>Way</strong>s <strong>of</strong> Iowa promotes building the<br />

statewide 2-1-1 infrastructure to strengthen disaster response<br />

and recovery efforts. Other key efforts <strong>of</strong> <strong>United</strong> <strong>Way</strong>s <strong>of</strong> Iowa<br />

include facilitating collaboration between local <strong>United</strong> <strong>Way</strong>s<br />

and establishing relationships with partners at all levels within<br />

the public, private and voluntary sectors.<br />

2-1-1 Get ConneCteD. Get AnsWeRs.<br />

2-1-1, a <strong>United</strong> <strong>Way</strong> <strong>of</strong> America national initiative and<br />

regional partnership <strong>of</strong> local <strong>United</strong> <strong>Way</strong>s, is a 24-hour<br />

toll-free information and referral line for health and human<br />

services. Trained information and referral operators provide<br />

assistance to callers seeking services such as childcare, rent<br />

and utility assistance, or care for the elderly. Administered by<br />

<strong>United</strong> <strong>Way</strong> <strong>of</strong> East Central Iowa, our area <strong>United</strong> <strong>Way</strong> 2-1-1<br />

serves the residents <strong>of</strong> 24 counties in Eastern and Southeastern<br />

Iowa and partners with Cedar Valley <strong>United</strong> <strong>Way</strong>, <strong>United</strong> <strong>Way</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> East Central Iowa, <strong>United</strong> <strong>Way</strong> <strong>of</strong> Johnson County, <strong>United</strong><br />

<strong>Way</strong> <strong>of</strong> Mahaska County, <strong>United</strong> <strong>Way</strong> <strong>of</strong> Wapello County and<br />

Waverly-Shell Rock Area <strong>United</strong> <strong>Way</strong>.
