OCA stands for Organización Clínica América (Organizational Clinic of
America). Hospital OCA was established in 1973 with only 30 beds and
a 100-person staff. Today it has grown into a tertiary-care hospital with
nearly 300 beds, 25 operating rooms, and 24 emergency beds attended by
2,000 physicians and surgeons, 500 nurses, and 150 additional staff. The
hospital treats about 100,000 outpatients and 30,000 inpatients every year,
of whom 300 are international patients (95 percent from the US and Canada).
The hospital’s most frequently performed procedures are gallbladder
removal, appendectomy, and radiotherapy. Some of the physicians and
staff speak English.
Known for exceptional medical technology, OCA’s nuclear medicine
department boasts two of the most advanced gamma cameras: the Infinia
and the Xeleris II with CT image processing. Unlike traditional anatomical
imaging, a gamma camera can show physiological functions, which
can help to identify disease processes by organ system. Other equipment
includes a Philips iU22 ultrasound, an iE33 ultrasound, Angiotac 1.5-Tesla
Intera and Philips Achieva 3.0T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners,
and numerous digital x-ray machines. These innovations support
diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases, cancer, heart and cardiovascular
disorders, neurological abnormalities, and dysfunctions of the
endocrine system. OCA was the first hospital in Mexico to obtain a positron
emission tomography (PET)–CT scanner with a cyclotron. Philips
Healthcare, GE Healthcare, and Miltenyi Biotech have recognized OCA
as a Center of Technological Excellence.
