December 2008 - January 2009 | 4 A Reliable Partner for Turbulent Times As 2008 draws to a close, a glance back at the ups and downs of the year proves quite astonishing. The world has undergone great change, and China’s role has developed along with it. The February snowstorm and May earthquake tested the limits of a new China, which persevered to put on a world-class Olympic Games in August. Now, as businesses across the globe face uncertainty in a time of financial crisis, the German Chamber of Commerce in China pledges to stand by its members and press ahead despite the tough times. How will the global economic slowdown affect China? What will happen next? Although the financial crisis will most certainly impact China, can one count on the sheer size of China’s domestic market to buffer the blow? Initially, foreign direct investment and exports will drop due to the difficulties faced by Western economies according to official estimates. However, this does not mean that the attractiveness of China’s market will decrease – exactly the opposite. As a country with consistent growth, most of which stemming from domestic sources such as consumer demand and a rising standard of living, China will secure its spot as the top choice for FDI in the coming years. While other nations get back on their feet, China’s consumer market will drive its economy full steam ahead. Major banks such as the Bank of China have already taken action to secure their overseas investments, moving many dollar funds into other denominations. So far, The German Chamber of Commerce in China the banking sector has seen a relatively small impact when compared with Europe and the United States – a source of optimism for the Chinese economy. In spite of new challenges, the German Chamber has many positive developments to announce. This past October, the Chamber opened a new office in Tianjin to support members in the region. Additionally, Guangzhou welcomed the Germany and China – moving ahead together initiative in November – details on both events are featured in this issue. Flipping through the Chamber Events section, readers will find that the German Chamber has continued to put on first-rate events this fall, with one of our fullest schedules to date across China. This issue also includess a special insert on the German Balls held in Beijing and Shanghai in November. We encourage members to take a look and find pictures of their friends and colleagues. The German Chamber of Commerce in China looks forward to 2009, with better events and improved services for our members, which now number 1,700 – approximately a 14% increase over 2008.
