Welcome to Downtown Stouffville!
This original Downtown area was the main hub to our early settlers, a social
place to gather and conduct business. The role and function of downtowns
continue to evolve, but one constant remains, it is the community retail and
entertainment core of our Municipality. With over 140 businesses in the
Downtown, we have a lot more to offer today for our residents and visitors.
As we continue to develop the Downtown area, I cannot help but notice all the
positive changes in just the past 18 months alone. Together with The Latcham
Gallery, the Lebovic Centre for Arts & Entertainment, the York Durham
Heritage Rail and the variety of leisure and cultural programs and events, we
are becoming a competitive tourism destination in the GTA. Enhancements to
the area including, new street furniture, improved flower basket program, and the added outdoor art
piece to the Sculpture Walk has had a lot of positive and deserving feedback, especially with visitors
attending the ballgames at the newly constructed Memorial Park Ball Diamond and Grandstand.
Our storefronts are filling-in and we can boast of a limited vacancy rate, thanks to recent new
merchants. I hope you take the time and explore the new businesses, such as Card’s Appliances,
Expedia Cruise Ship Centers, Wine Creations, Fishbone Bistro, Red Bulb Cafe, Aaron Purveyor’s Fine
Foods, Moonflower’s Magical Touch, the Meat Merchant and many others. 2012 is already shaping up
with inquiries about new retail opportunities.
We were fortunate to have the “Main St. Ontario” funding ($150,000 over 3 years, 2010-2012) from the
Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. This enabled the Town to have a Downtown
Coordinator to kick start and bring a focused effort on our Downtown Revitalization Plan. Key
initiatives included the development of joint marketing; hosting community events; and educational
training support for our merchants. Our Downtown hosted some new and well attended events such
as the weekly summer series of Free, Family Outdoor Movies and programs such as Stouffvillicious
and the Downtown Shopping Incentive. Thursday’s have never been better since the weekly Farmers’
Market made a new home on Park Drive from 2:00 – 7:00 pm (May to October) and the Street Scene
performers lined the Main Street, for your listening pleasure from 4:30 – 7:30 pm during the months of
July and August. These events bring our community together and help our Downtown business grow.
The Downtown Stouffville Working Group, a Council appointed Committee, is currently working on
several items, including the Downtown Physical Improvements proposal for the Main Street. I look
forward to seeing the plans for the new streetscape, as we continue to make Whitchurch-Stouffville a
community that residents are pleased to call home.
