A criminal mischief complaint was made to the Glenville Police Department regarding an incident that occurred around the Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake School District administration building at 50 Cypress Drive, in which a group of teens was witnessed damaging playing fi elds, as well as fencing and a playground. The property was intentionally run over, hit or pulled out of the ground by a vehicle with tow straps. The total cost of the damage done to the district’s property is estimated to be about $4,000. Each of the teens arrested was charged with one count of felony criminal mischief and released on appearance tickets for the Town of Glenville Court. Other arrests • Daniel Tellado, 33, of 929 Delmont Ave., Schenectady, was arrested by the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Offi ce and charged with aggravated DWI on Saturday, July 11, following a traffi c stop at the intersection of Routes 9 and 236 in the Town of Halfmoon. Tellado was allegedly observed traveling 20 mph in a 45 mph zone and committing multiple traffi c violations. Tellado submitted to a breath test at the Milton station, according to police reports. Turbo Kick is offered on Tuesday, 8:00 to 8:45 a.m., and Thursday, 5:30 to 6:15 p.m. It is free to Center members, $5 per class for non-members. Summer Aquatics class is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:00 to 3:45 p.m., at the Outdoor Pool. There is no charge to members, He was also charged with failure to maintain lane, failure to keep right, parking on pavement, failure to signal, failure to dim high beams, unsafe tires, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and failure to notify of address change. Tellado was remanded to the Saratoga County jail. He is scheduled to appear in Halfmoon Town Court on Thursday, July 16. • Niskayuna police arrested Joshua Dubois, 21, of Nassau Street in Schenectady on Sunday, July 5, and charged him with DWI, unlawful fl eeing of a police offi cer, reckless endangerment, speeding, failure to obey a police officer, improper passing on the right and failure to use the designated lane. • Glenville police arrested Shawn Snow, 22, of Birchwood Drive in Duanesburg on Saturday, July 4, on charges of DWI and speeding. • Glenville police arrested Suzann Carlton, 43, of Saratoga Road in Glenville and charged her with DWI on Wednesday, July 8. • Glenville police arrested Joseph Cassella, 18, of Fruitwood Drive in Burnt Hills on DWI charges and changing lanes when hazardous on Thursday, July 9. • Glenville police arrested Craig McCormick, 36, of Wren Street in Amsterdam and charged him with a DWI and speeding on Saturday, July 11. Spotlight July 16, 2009 Page 3 Downtown will get a new ’do Paul Mitchell to open training and retail facility across from Proctors By JACKIE SHER sherj@spotlightnews.com Schenectady County offi cials announced on Thursday, July 9, that Paul Mitchell has signed a lease to occupy almost 20,000 square feet of space at 411 State St. in downtown Schenectady. The company plans to open a retail store and training school at the site – a project that represents a nearly $2 million investment in Schenectady County. The new location is expected to attract more than 250 employees, students and customers to downtown Schenectady each day and is slated to be open in February. “Paul Mitchell is a $900 million dollar company. They’re worldwide, and one of the principals is a Schenectady native,” said Ray Gillen, chairman of Schenectady Metroplex. “Giulio Veglio is a rock star in the hair world. He personally owns 10 other Paul Mitchell schools.” Veglio currently owns and operates Paul Mitchell Schools in Orlando as well as nine other schools throughout the United States. He is a master associate with Paul Mitchell. Before joining the company in 1987, he worked with a top designer in Italy, Jean Michelle, as well as Vidal Sassoon in London and L’Oreal in Paris. According to Gillen, Veglio is an internationally known trainer, author, motivational speaker, hair designer and salon manager. “Paul Mitchell Schools are designed to teach you the skills you’ll need, inspire you to explore Citing the recent month-long stalemate in the state Senate, Assemblyman James Tedisco, R-Schenectady, announced on Saturday, July 11, that he plans to introduce a bill that would allow voters to petition for a recall of their elected offi cials. In a statement, Tedisco singled out Democrat Senator Pedro Espada, who crossed the aisle with Hiram Monserrate in June to give Republicans the majority in the Senate. The school, which will be located across from Proctors and the Bow Tie Cinema will offer licensed programs in cosmetology and related fi elds. The school will employ almost 50 professionals within three years, serving more than 200 students and will be open both days and evenings. In addition to providing training to students to obtain their NYS Board of Cosmetology requirements certification, the Schenectady school will offer advanced courses to help current salon employees enhance their technical and business skills. July 9. “What Senator Pedro Espada has done, aided and abetted by many of his colleagues, is nothing less than an outright mugging of our democratic process and those who should and still can be the most powerful voices in our government,” said Tedisco. According to Tedisco, the proposed law would require 50,000 signatures for the recall of any statewide offi ce, and 10 percent of the electorate or 5,000 signatures, whichever is lesser, for the recall of a state legislator. A vote would ensue 90 days from when the Board of Elections certifi ed the recall. To accommodate Paul Mitchell trainers and others who will visit the new school, the company has also signed a lease to occupy a 2,600-square-foot apartment in the Witbeck Building directly across the street from 411 State St. “It’s going to be a great addition to downtown. They’re going to invest $2 million in the property,” said Gillen. He said that people will be visiting from salons around the Northeast. This also means that they’ll be staying in hotels in the area, eating at restaurants in the area, etc. He noted that this will be the only Paul Mitchell school in Upstate New York and New England. Paul Mitchell signed a 15-year lease with Galesi Group, which purchased the 411 State St. On Tuesday, July 7, the Schalmont Board of Education approved the appointment of Jason Thompson to the position of assistant principal at Jefferson Elementary School. Thompson comes to the school with previous experience as an educator, administrator and entrepreneur. He is filling the position vacated by former assistant principal Beth Bini. “Jason is committed to students and to raising student achievement. He also has a good sense of humor, which you greatly need in this profession,” said Joby Gifford, the principal of Jefferson Elementary School. Thompson most recently worked for the Cobleskill- Richmondville Central School District, where he spent fi ve years as a teacher. The site at 411 State Street in Schenectady is slated to open in February as a Paul Mitchell training and retail facility. Prior to this, there were plans to open the building as the Big House Brewing Company, which was supposed to move from its Albany location but ran into fi nancial trouble before going out of business. Metroplex put $100,000 into getting the asbestos removed from the building and then another $250,000 into a new façade for the front of the building. “We ran into delays,” said Gillen of the failed restaurant project. “It’s unfortunate that he ran into diffi culties getting the fi nancing he needed to fi nish the building, so we move on.” Metroplex had loaned Waite $1 million toward his project. This loan is completely protected since Galesi purchased the building, said Gillen. “Paul Mitchell is a very-well known brand. It is very cool. They really emphasize fun, and will expand this September. He also spent a year as a summer school principal and an administrative intern. Prior to his time in Cobleskill-Richmondville, Thompson spent a year teaching second grade in the South Colonie Central School District and eight months substitute teaching for Capital Region BOCES. “He has a broad range of experiences at both ends of the elementary spectrum. He also has a strong background in technology, which will nicely complement our efforts to enhance elementary instruction with technology,” said Gifford. From 1998 to 2002, Thompson co-owned a company that provided insurance claims services for medical practitioners. This venture gave him numerous experiences in areas such as it’s a really good career choice and it’s a transportable skill,” said Gillen. Paul Mitchell Products began in 1980. The company now has annual sales approaching $900 million. “I am excited to welcome Paul Mitchell to Schenectady County,” said Susan Savage, chairwoman of the Schenectady County Legislature, D-Niskayuna, in a written statement. “Our economic development team continues to attract unique and diverse businesses to Schenectady County.
