<str<strong>on</strong>g>Leopard</str<strong>on</strong>g>s have been reported from several localities in Jordan. The last c<strong>on</strong>firmed report dates from 1987.<br />

There have been occasi<strong>on</strong>al unc<strong>on</strong>firmed reports since. Recent field surveys have failed to find signs <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

leopard presence.<br />

Distributi<strong>on</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Leopard</str<strong>on</strong>g>s were reported as more comm<strong>on</strong><br />

than <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> cheetah by Tristram<br />

(1866, 1888) in many areas <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Jordan<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Palestine. Ernst Schmitz recorded<br />

five leopards shot near Jerusalem in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

first decade <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 20 th century (Hardy<br />

1947). Ahar<strong>on</strong>i (1930) reported a leopard<br />

killed between Ramallah <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Emmaus.<br />

Ano<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r animal was killed <strong>on</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Palestinian-Lebanese fr<strong>on</strong>tier <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

a cub was secured near Safad, west <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Lake Galilee (Hardy 1947, Qumsiyeh<br />

1996, Qumsiyeh et al. 1993). Hardy<br />

(1947) stated that leopards still inhabited<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> wadi south <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Petra <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Wadi<br />

Zarqa Ma’en as well as an individual<br />

shot at Ain Ghidyan, north <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Aqaba.<br />

Harris<strong>on</strong> (1968) reported a specimen<br />

shot west <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ma’an. Lehmann (1965)<br />

reported several observati<strong>on</strong>s west <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Dead Sea. A leopard was killed<br />

by a Bedouin in Wadi Darajah, in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

desert east <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Dead Sea in October<br />

1965 (Blake 1966). Clarke (1977)<br />

listed <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> following localities as previous<br />

reports <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> leopard from Jordan;<br />

Petra, Wadi Zarqa Ma’en, Ain el Taba,<br />

Ain Buweirdeh, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ma’an. The latest<br />

report <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> leopard came from an<br />

observati<strong>on</strong> in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Tafilah area where it<br />

attacked <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> killed sheep during February<br />

1987 (Amr & Disi 1988, Qumsiyeh<br />

et al. 1993). Figure 1 shows <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se<br />

localities. Sporadic local reports have<br />

been received since <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n, possibly referring<br />

to vagrants, but remain unc<strong>on</strong>firmed.<br />

A field visit by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> authors in<br />

2005 with local rangers failed to find<br />

any signs <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> leopard presence.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Leopard</str<strong>on</strong>g>s became rare after <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> turn<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> twentieth century <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sec<strong>on</strong>d<br />

half <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> century it was almost<br />

extinct from Jordan. Major causes <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

extincti<strong>on</strong> are habitat loss, hunting <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

reduced prey availability. Habitat loss<br />

is mainly due to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> rapid increase in<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> human populati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> development<br />

projects associated with this<br />

growth. Hunting has been a feature for<br />

millennia for sport <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> out <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> fear for<br />

man <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> his domestic animals. Most<br />

large-size prey items for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> leopard<br />

have become rare, especially in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

sec<strong>on</strong>d half <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 20 th century.<br />

Habitat<br />

Three protected areas totaling 1,300<br />

km 2 (Wadi Rum, Dana, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Wadi Mujib)<br />

are sited al<strong>on</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> historical range<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> leopard, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> a fourth is proposed.<br />

Prey<br />

Nubian ibex Capra nubiana occur<br />

in Wadi Mujib Wildlife Reserve <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
