Welcome to this very first edition of the Van Dyke-Eight Mile Gateway Collaborative “V8 Business Directory”. The slogan for the Directory is “Think Regionally – Shop Locally”. Neighbor 2 Neighbor – Business 2 Business – V8 hopes this Directory will assist you in shopping, patronizing, and even discovering local shops and services within the V8 district. Much like the telephone directory, the V8 Business Directory lists business names according to handy use categories, such as antiques, autos, home improvements, toys and wedding. The V8 target area for this directory focuses primarily on retail business, religious, educational and service entities along the Van Dyke corridor from Six Mile (McNichols) to Ten Mile, Mound Road to Hoover, as well as those listings along the mile roads within these boundaries. Data for this directory was gathered through windshield surveys, personal contacts and computer information. While every effort was made to be as inclusive as possible, some omissions were inevitable, simply because a building did not have its contact information visible, or because it was industrial in nature, the owner declined to be listed or because the store opened after the publishing deadline. Funding to publish this Directory was made possible through a program known as the “Metro Detroit Regional Investment Initiative” (MDRII) of the Local Initiative Support Corporation (LISC). MDRII was initiated as part of a competitive grant process in 2004 and extended through 2008, as the three cities of Center Line, Detroit, and Warren, along with participating non profit groups, development authorities, and agencies pledged to work together under the blended name of the Van Dyke-Eight Mile (V8) Gateway Collaborative. Through MDRII, the V8 Gateway Collaborative succeeded in sponsoring programs of social equity, physical revitalization, and economic development. Publication of this directory is a culmination of those efforts with over 500 business listings. V8 appreciates the fact that many of these businesses are family owned and recognizes the important role that they, along with the other listings, play in the economy and job growth of this area. When combined, with existing industrial uses, the economic strength of the V8 area becomes regionally significant. Strategically, geographically, and collaboratively, V8 is poised to propel this area into a regional investment district. Capitalizing on this strength, perhaps this directory will also serve as a handy resource to help you launch that new business idea that has been on your mind-and needed-right here! The cities of Center Line, Detroit and Warren stand ready to assist. We trust this directory will be an important step in fostering that increased investment and promotion.
