New Partnership
with Southwest
Airlines
Philanthropy Responds
The Dekelboum Family Foundation’s
gift of $1.5 million to renovate and expand
the Medical Oncology/ Hematology Center
at Washington Cancer Institute will add
six new patient exam rooms, resulting
in a total of 15 patient rooms. A larger,
more comfortable patient waiting area
will be constructed and the nursing station
renovated to enable a more efficient
patient registration process. This capital
expansion improvement will allow 30
additional patients to be seen daily and will
also reduce patient waiting times. Once
the project is completed, the facility will
be named The Dekelboum Family Medical
Oncology/Hematology Center.

Travel Grant Provides Transportation for Patients and Families

is pleased to announce the
Southwest Airlines Medical
Transport Grant. This new partnership
creates a strategic alliance to provide
complimentary roundtrip airfare for
patients and their caregivers who must
travel for medical care.
With national recognition for medical
advancements in any number of
select disciplines, it’s not uncommon for
an out of state patient to seek treatment
at the Hospital Center. In these circumstances,
the cost of medical assistance
is covered by insurance, but the travel
expense is not. Often, many patients are
already burdened with deep financial

treatment and ongoing access to leading
clinical trials, performed by a team
of nationally-recognized experts. The
Medical Oncology/ Hematology Center
specializes in the treatment of malignant
and non-malignant diseases of the blood
and solid tumors. Led by Cancer Institute
medical director Sandra M. Swain, MD,
medical oncologists work in teams to offer
tailored medical and social support services
strain due to health issues, and the cost
of travel can be a prohibitive burden for
those in need.
The alliance between Southwest
and Washington Hospital Center will
provide the means for patients and their
caregivers to seek the most advanced
