FROM THE VILLAGE PRESIDENT…
Dear Friends:
Spring is in the air … the days are getting longer … we’re in
Daylight Savings Time … and looking forward to another warm
and wonderful summer. However, before looking ahead to
those nice months, I’d like to reflect a little about the year 2010
and the changes that took place in our fine community.
The points listed below are a synopsis of my State of the Village
address which was presented to the Saukville Chamber of
Commerce and the Port Washington-Saukville Rotary Club. It
can also be found on the Village’s website in PDF form.
The theme of the Power Point Presentation was that I believe
Saukville has an “APP” for each of our needs and then I went
on to explain them further:
Saukville prides itself on having a full-service Police Department.
This group continues to remain on top of their profession
with the purchase of and training on six Smith &
Wesson M&P-15 Patrol Rifles with EO Tech Sights.
On October 16, 2010, the Village’s Emergency Management
Director and the Saukville Fire Department sponsored a
Community Preparedness Functional Exercise to simulate
a hazardous materials spill incident with complications at
CCP. This event was very useful as training for everyone
concerned.
Mayfair Drive was in the process of being refurbished so the
Utilities Department checked all sanitary manholes (9-11)
and found they were leaking. Utilities used new technology
to raise the manholes to grade level with a recycled
material product that one person could lift alone rather
than lifting concrete rings with a backhoe.
South Main Street had a fire hydrant that needed replacing
because it was leaking water and couldn’t be turned off. It
didn’t have a pumper nozzle connection or a shut off valve
which would be needed in case of a fire in the area. This
hydrant was changed out with the free cooperation of WE
Energies as they held their electric pole in place during the
work.
In addition to the rain garden at Village Hall, two more rain
gardens were added to the Village … one at the Department
of Public Works building and one at Oscar Grady
Library.
The $6+ million Wisconsin Humane Society Ozaukee Campus
Victoria Wellens Center is now open for business. This
beautiful 22,000 square foot building located on HWY 33
just west of Saukville’s Post Office is Gold LEED Certified
… the first LEED certified shelter in the Midwest.
This past fall, Milan Estates, a community based residential
facility, opened its doors to its first assisted living residents.
The very successful La Chimenea business plan that has operated
in Germantown for a number of years is now also
available in Saukville on Foster Drive.
Jay and Jody Schwanz have taken over the operation and
ownership of Wagen’s since the building was purchased
by Rob Brooks. The name for this new Business “APP” is
J’Sports Bar & Grill.
Tanya Haswell has taken her business, “Now It’s Personal
Photography”, to a new level with the purchase of the
building at 117 South Mill Street.
By the end of summer, 2011, our Walmart store will have the
appearance of a totally new building … inside and out and
including the parking lot. Walmart’s size will increase to
153,283 square feet as it adds 56,650 square feet and
becomes a Supercenter.
This Business Expansion “APP” is the right answer to the
question of Walmart wanting to grow in Saukville and
Saukville’s need to keep the existing building occupied.
Walmart has promised to keep the renovated building and
grounds in much better shape moving forward. Documents
created between the Walmart group and the Village
of Saukville will provide certainty to all concerned that the
new partnership will be respectful of the needs of all.
With regard to the Future Business “APP” of Saukville, construction
continues on MShiraz, a distributor of exclusively
Wisconsin wines, in our Business Park. This 7,500 square
foot building will provide warehouse and office space for
this growing business.
Patrice’s has a new owner whose intention it is to open a restaurant
called the Firehouse Inn. The interior of the building
will be a firehouse theme and the menu will be varied
and affordable.
In 2011, it is my expectation that the Village Board and staff
will spend some time looking into the use of social media
to “get the word out”, as it were, to help with local development.
This is an avenue we need to explore and use to its
best advantage.
I closed by reminding everyone that, as we have in the past,
we will continue to watchdog the Village budget making sure all
taxpayer funds are wisely spent. 2010 offered only a .6% increase
in operating expenses which I believe to be commendable
since even utility costs went up considerably more than
that amount. The Village Board and Village Administrator always
spend whatever time is necessary to trim expenses to
minimums while still providing services the public deems to be
important.

Please be reminded that each of the above listed “APP’s” would not have taken place without the excellent team work Saukville experiences
among the Village Board, various Committees, the Management Team, staff and, last but not least, our volunteers. As
residents, we can be proud of each of these groups and the things they make happen!

VILLAGE’S TRASH & RECYCLING SERVICE
Veolia Environmental Services provides roll-out garbage
and recycling carts to all residential households. Collection
is every Thursday; Friday during a holiday week.
Carts must be placed curbside by 7:00 a.m. on pick-up day. Carts
must face the street as indicated by the arrow, must be fully
accessible, and be placed side by side with a minimum of
three feet of space between carts and/or other obstacles.
Recycling will be collected only every other week. Recycling
collection dates are posted on the Village website under the Navigation
Menu - “Recycling Collection” link and can also be found on
the Village's Government Cable Access Channel 25. Information
is also available at Village Hall and Oscar Grady Library. All recyclable
materials (paper, plastic, glass, metal) can be placed in the
same recycle cart; there is no need to separate. Residents are
urged not to place garbage loosely in carts as this will lead to odor
and pest problems as well as blowing materials when the carts are
emptied. Any garbage or recyclable materials placed curbside in
any container other than the carts will not be collected.
Large Items: To dispose of large items such as furniture, mattresses,
and appliances, you must arrange for special pick-up by
Veolia or take items to the Veolia drop-off site at 803 North River
Road, West Bend. There is a fee for large item disposal. Contact
Veolia directly at 800-387-0949 for prices and information.
EASTER EGG HUNT- SATURDAY, APRIL 23, 2011
This year’s Easter Egg Hunt will be held Saturday, April
23 rd , at Grady Park, beginning at 10:00 a.m. This event is
for children ages 9 and under. There will be treats for all, prizes for
the lucky few, and a visit from the Easter Bunny! This annual
event is sponsored by the Saukville Moose Lodge and Saukville
American Legion Post #470.

Village park facilities are available for rent. Resident and
non-resident fees apply. Information can be found on the

The Village Newsletter is published three times a year. All newsletters

MEDICINE/PRESCRIPTION DROP-OFF
The Saukville Police Department now has a Med-Return
Collection unit located in the lobby of the P.D. building at
649 E Green Bay Ave. Residents can drop unwanted or
expired prescription, over-the-counter, and other unused household
medications in the drop unit Monday through Friday during
regular business hours for proper disposal.

APPRAISAL/REVALUATION IN 2011
The Village’s assessment firm, Accurate Appraisal, LLC. is scheduled
to do a full reassessment of all properties in the Village between
March and July 2011. This will be an outside inspection
only. Your cooperation with the appraiser will be greatly appreciated.
They will have credentials when they come to your property.

ASSESSMENTS/OPEN BOOK/BOARD OF REVIEW
The 2011 Open Book has been scheduled for June
22 nd from 11:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. and June 23 rd from Noon - 7:00
p.m. You are welcome to visit Village Hall during these hours to
meet with the Assessors and discuss assessment values for your
property . The Board of Review is scheduled for July 11 th from
6:00-8:00 p.m. If you have questions on your current assessment
value, you may call Accurate Appraisal; you do not need to wait
until the Open Book session. Accurate Appraisal can be reached

JULY PROPERTY TAX PAYMENTS
All 2011 property taxes not paid by January 31, 2011 must
be paid to the Ozaukee County Treasurer. Second installment
payments are due to the County Treasurer by July
31, 2011. Make checks payable to the Ozaukee County Treasurer
and mail to P.O. Box 994, Port Washington, WI 53074.
RUMMAGE & REAL ESTATE SALE SIGNS
The Village has an Ordinance regarding rummage/ garage
sale, real estate, directional, or informational signs.
Such signs must comply with traffic visibility requirements
and are not permitted in Village parks or median areas.
Improperly placed signs will be confiscated. Signs shall be erected
no more than 24 hours before a rummage sale and taken down no
later than 24 hours after. For more information, contact Village

Department of Water & Wastewater
FIRE HYDRANT FLUSHING
The Saukville Water Department will be flushing hydrants
throughout the Village weekdays between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00
p.m. April 11 th through April 22 nd . There may be some discoloration
in your water during this process. This is iron and is not
harmful. We recommend that you do not do laundry if your water is
discolored. If you forget and your clothes have a reddish appearance,
DO NOT DRY THE CLOTHES; rather rewash in cold water to
remove the discoloration. Running the tap for a short period of time
will clear the lines after the flushing in your area is completed.
MEDICINE COLLECTION
Please do not discard old medications by flushing them
down the toilet or throwing them in the trash. Save them
in their original containers in a safe place. You can drop
them in the Med-Return Collection box located in the lobby
of the Village of Saukville Police Department, Monday
through Friday during normal business hours, for proper disposal.
PAYMENT OPTION
You can pay your Village water utility bill online! Just go to the website
- www.officialpayments.com - click on Local; Wisconsin; Saukville,
Village of; utility payment; then enter amount of payment and
appropriate information. There is a convenience fee of 2.75% for
credit card use and a flat fee of $2.75 for e-checks. We also offer
automatic withdrawal from your checking or savings account.
Your quarterly payment can be deducted automatically from your
selected account on the 25 th of the billing month, at no additional
charge. Go to the Village website (Village Services/Water & Sewer
Utility) to download a form to sign up for automatic withdrawal. We
can also arrange a payment plan if necessary. Contact Village Hall
for more information.
ON DEMAND WATER SOFTENERS
Consider buying an On Demand water softener when a new one is
needed or an old one is replaced. The DNR would like the Village to
lower its chloride output into the Milwaukee River. By using an On
Demand water softener, which only regenerates based on the volume
of water used, you will be saving money which, in turn, uses
less salt and water thus reducing the chlorides coming into the
Wastewater Plant.
PLUGGED SANITARY SEWER LATERAL
If you find water standing in your basement, stop using water in your
house. Watch the height of the water on the basement floor; it
should stop coming up, then either stay the same or go down slowly.

This indicates that you may have a plugged sanitary sewer lateral
leading to the main sanitary sewer line and you should call a
plumber immediately. Remember that your low flow 1.3 gallon per
flush toilet has very little water to flush the solids out through the
lines. Be careful what you flush. A lot of paper product in your toilet
requires a lot of water to move it along.
WATER CONSERVATION TID-BITS
• Soak, don’t spray. Install drip-irrigation or soaker
hoses for more efficient watering in planting beds and
beneath shrubs and trees.
• Do it the hard way. Use a broom or rake (not a hose) to remove
debris from driveways and walkways. It saves water and
it’s good exercise!
• Conserve water naturally. Select plants that are native to your
region and can thrive with little or no extra watering. Your local
nursery can help you identify and select drought-tolerant plants.
• Keep it cool. Water your lawn and plants early in the morning
when the sun’s rays aren’t working to evaporate your water.
• Let it grow. Adjust the height of your lawnmower to cut your
grass higher. This helps protect roots from heat stress and
reduces the loss of moisture to evaporation.
• Sidewalks don’t need water. Avoid planting turf in areas that
are difficult to irrigate properly such as steep inclines and isolated
strips along sidewalks and driveways.
SUMP PUMPS
Please remember to check your sump pump and make sure it is
hooked up correctly to the discharge lateral and not to the sanitary
sewer system. Per Village Ordinance, it is illegal to hook-up or discharge
storm water or clear water into the Village’s sanitary sewer
lines. Since all discharges to the sanitary sewer end up at the treatment
plant, this creates additional problems to properly
process the wastewater for eventual discharge to the river.
HIGH WATER BILLS AND WATER LEAKS IN HOMES
When your water bill becomes higher than normal, there is
usually a leak in your home. 95% of all leaks are toilets and
most times you cannot hear the leak. We recommend that you
check your toilets every 6 months to make sure they are not leaking.
Place a drop of natural food coloring in the tank - do not flush.
Check it in 20 minutes. If color appears in the bowl, it is leaking
water. The toilet most likely leaking is the toilet rarely used. This is
also a good time to operate all of your valves in your home and to
start reading your meter weekly to make sure you have no leaks and
that you are only billed for the water you use.
TORNADO AND SEVERE WEATHER AWARENESS WEEK: APRIL 11TH - 15TH Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week is a good time to go over the plans you have made to ensure the safety of
your family when severe weather strikes. Be prepared.
A STATEWIDE TORNADO DRILL - PLANNED FOR THURSDAY, APRIL 14, 2011.
The Village will sound the warning sirens for this drill between 1:15 and 1:30 p.m. If actual severe weather occurs anywhere
in the state on April 14th , the drill will be postponed until April 15th .

Economic Development 2011 SPRING COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
NEW AND UNDER CONSTRUCTION - COMMERCIAL:
Walmart’s expansion and redevelopment is moving forward on
schedule. Planned completion is fall of 2011. The store will remain
open during construction.
A wine distributorship, MShiraz, is nearing completion of its new
facility at the Progress Development Condominiums at 658 North
Progress Drive.
Cramer Coil and Transformer Co. Inc. is completing land acquisition
and aggregation plans to accommodate their first phase of
building expansion anticipated to begin in summer 2011.
A new restaurant, The Firehouse is coming to 100 South Main
Street, formerly Patrice’s. Anticipated opening is early May 2011.

YARD WASTE (COMPOST) DISPOSAL
How do you get rid of garden waste, leaves, and lawn rakings from
your spring yard clean-up? Wisconsin DNR strongly recommends
that these materials NOT be placed in the street at any time. Place
them in bags, buckets, or other suitable containers and bring them
to the compost drop-off site at Public Works.

CURBSIDE CHIPPING
The Village chipping crew will begin touring the Village starting
April 4 th and continuing every Monday through October 31 st .
PLEASE stack branches (3” maximum diameter) neatly on the parkway
(area between the sidewalk and curb), with cut ends of the
branches facing the street, by 6:30 a.m. on Monday mornings. DO
NOT place branches on the sidewalk or street. DO NOT place
branches curbside sooner than the immediate preceding weekend.

The Wisconsin Humane Society’s Victoria Wellens Ozaukee
Center, 630 West Dekora Street, had its official ribbon-cutting/
grand opening on Saturday, March 26, 2011. The facility is now
open to the public.
FARMERS MARKET 2011
This year’s Farmers Market will run form June 19 th through October
30 th (closed July 3 & Sept. 4). The market features fresh, inseason
Wisconsin produce grown by area farmers, as well as
greenhouse and floral products, and hand made crafts. Please
support this worthwhile community activity emphasizing “grow local,
buy local, eat local” common sense economics, Sundays - 9:00
a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Veterans Park, Downtown Saukville.

pesticides, waste fuel, anti-freeze, and typical household cleaners.
These materials must NOT be placed in the trash. They can be
taken to the Ozaukee County Hazardous Waste Collection Site
(information below). Fees will be charged on a per pound basis.
Note: Waste oil should be taken to the Ozaukee County Highway
Department, 410 South Spring Street, Port Washington.

ONE BOOK ONE COMMUNITY
This spring, Saukville and Port Washington are coming together for
the third annual Character Counts: One Book One Community
event. Pick up a copy of Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer at the Oscar
Grady Public Library and join us for a book discussion on April 13 th
at 6:30 p.m. We will also be showing the movie Storm over Everest
on April 19 th and 21 st at 6:00 p.m. Registration is not required for
these events and all are welcome to attend.
USED BOOK SALE
The Friends of the Oscar Grady Library will be hosting a book sale in
the library community room April 25 th -30 th during regular library
hours. The book sale will include hardcover books, paperbacks,
children’s books and movies and all proceeds will benefit the library
in support of programming for all ages.
CHILDREN’S EVENTS:
NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK – APRIL 10 th – 16 th
Culver’s Restaurants are once again offering a fun drawing campaign
for children ages 11 and under. Kids can pick up a coloring
sheet from the library and draw and color a scene from their favorite
book. Each child who participates will receive a “Be Our Guest”
coupon for a free single scoop of frozen custard and be entered in a
drawing for a chance to win additional prizes. All coloring sheets
must be turned in by April 30 th and will be displayed in the Library.
SUMMER READING PROGRAM - JUNE 13 th - AUGUST 6 th
This year’s themes are “One World, Many Stories” for ages 2 -11,
“You Are Here” for ages 12 and up, and “Novel Destinations” for
adults. Registration begins June 13 th . Special guest performers and
programs are being planned. The program is free and full of fun,
hands-on activities and incentives to keep kids reading during the
summer. Calendars and further information will be available at the

LICENSE PLATE/VEHICLE REGISTRATION
The Saukville Police Department issues license plates for passenger cars, trucks, and motorcycles. Vehicle registration services are also
available. We offer this service Monday - Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. To register a vehicle, please bring in the signed title, release
of lien paperwork (if applicable), and identification. For more information, please call the Saukville Police Department.
BOATING AND ATV SAFETY CLASSES
The Police Department will be offering a Department of Natural Resources Certified Boating Safety Course this spring; the date and time
to be determined. Contact the Saukville Police Department for exact dates, times, and information.
CURFEW ORDINANCE
The Village of Saukville has an 11:00 p.m. curfew for minors under the age of 16 years. Parents will be held accountable for any vandalism
that their children do to Village property. Please know where your children are and urge them to obey the Curfew Law.
BICYCLE LICENSING
For a $3.00 fee, the Police Department will issue a non-expiring bicycle license. Pick up a registration form at the Police Department.
Village Ordinance requires all bicycles operated on Village streets, alleys, or public highways be licensed.

Summer Playground Program
The Village of Saukville offers a Summer Playground Program that
offers creative and energetic leaders, active games, theme craft
sessions, and fun field trips. A trip to the Port Washington outdoor
pool is offered once a week (weather permitting). Our goal is to offer
a safe and worry free experience for both the child and parent. This
is not a day-care program, rather an afternoon alternative of outdoor
fun and structured activities for kids ages six (and entering 1st
grade) through 14 (and not yet in high school). Parents must have
alternate arrangements in place in the event of emergency closing.
The Playground Program runs Monday through Friday 12:30 to 5:00
p.m. (Wednesdays to 4:30 p.m.) We will be closed on July 4, 2011.
Programming begins Monday, June 20 th at Grady Park and runs
through August 12 th . Registration begins Monday, May 9, 2011 at
Village Hall (Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.) .
River Fest Community Clean-up — May 21, 2011
Come join the 16 th Annual Saukville River Fest, a time dedicated to
cleaning along the banks of the Milwaukee River, Village parks, and
streets! This event, scheduled for Saturday, May 21, 2011 is sponsored
by the Village Room Tax and includes participation of local
businesses. The event promotes family, fun, cooperation, and environmental
responsibility and awareness among citizens.
Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m. at Grady Park with clean-up to follow
until about 11:30 a.m. Bus transportation will be provided for volunteers
to work various sites. Participants are strongly urged to wear
long pants, shirts, heavy duty shoes, and gloves for safety. Fully
enclosed footwear MUST be worn. Lunch is provided at Grady Park
after the clean-up and participants will receive a “thank you” gift.
Fire Department
Registration at Village Hall is required before your
child can attend the Summer Playground Program.
An Open House and Registration will be held at
Grady Park on Tuesday, June 14 th from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.
The fee for Saukville residents is $110.00 per child; family maximum
$220.00. Non-resident fee is $125.00 per child. A t-shirt is included
with your registration fee.
Registration forms for the Summer Playground Program are available
online at www.village.saukville.wi.us (Community/
Recreation). You can view the entire 2011 Village of Saukville Park
and Recreation Program and print any desired sections or forms.
Copies are also available at Village Hall and Oscar Grady Library.

Registration is required for participation. Minors must
have at least one (1) parent/guardian, or approved
responsible adult, accompanying them the day of the
clean-up. Community groups are encouraged to
participate.
Obtain a registration form at Village Hall, Oscar Grady Library, or
download the form from the Village website. Advance registration
forms should be turned in at Village Hall by 4:00 p.m. Friday, May
20, 2011 or you can register the day of the event at 8:30 a.m. at
Grady Park.

Chief Gilly Schultz and the members of the Department would like to thank those Village residents and businesses who “Adopted the
Neighborhood Fire Hydrant” this past winter season. We appreciate this show of community spirit and cooperation with the Department.
As spring turns to summer, the Fire Department would once again like to remind all residents there are several Village fire safety ordinances
frequently violated. Violators may receive a citation and a bill for fire services if we respond to complaints of illegal burning.
§101-17 B(1)(a) The use of electric, charcoal, wood or gas portable or permanent cooking grills designed and sized for normal residential
outdoor use will not be permitted to be used or stored above the first story of any building, including on a balcony, raised porch, or platform.
Fire Department officials have noticed grills of various sizes and types on balconies of apartment and condominium buildings.
IF YOU HAVE A GRILL ON A BALCONY PLEASE REMOVE IT.
§101-17 B(1)(e) Recreational campfires in a covered or approved container or device located at least 10 feet from all combustibles, buildings,
decks, and lot lines, with prior written permit from the Fire Chief, are permitted with special requirements that must be followed. Permits
are available at Village Hall during regular business hours. Recreational campfire devices are not allowed on combustible (wooden)
decks.
The Saukville Fire Department has received its newest piece of apparatus and the Port Washington Fire Department will host the formal
“Baptism” or Wet Down at the Saukville Fire Department on July 9th . Watch for more information as the date approaches.
Chief Schultz is pleased to announce the appointment of Carolyn Flood as Lieutenant/Training Officer of the Emergency Medical Services
Division of the Fire Department. Lt. Flood replaces Phyllis Carrier who retired after many dedicated years of service to the community.
We are currently looking for men and women who wish to serve their community as a paid, on call fire fighter or EMT. If you are interested,
please stop at the fire house any Monday night between 6:30 - 7:00 pm. You may also pick up an application at Village Hall.
