Page 2 the Dispatcher We are preparing for the Oklahoma City Train Show and Ken Kozak has agreed to serve in the position previously held by Bob Cook. I want to thank Bob for his long service as our rep to the Train Show Group. Ken has been calling people and has almost enough to fill the needed slots. Thank all of you who have volunteered. We believe we have finally paid all the bills for the Thomas event and the profit to the Museum was about $67,000. This is better than the previous year and will help our 2013 budget. The event was successful enough that we have signed up to do it again next year. Thanks to all for making this event a success. The Christmas train is upon us. We plan to have the same ride as last year; North through the Golf Course to Adventure District Station and return. We need car hosts for five cars. Two or three helpers are needed for each car. If you can help, call or e-mail Anne at the Museum office and she will slot you in. Santa Claus, Smiley the Clown, and a new helper from Harkins Theatre will be on hand for the event. As usual we will have hot chocolate, cookies and candy canes from Santa for our young guests. This is one of our best events of the year so come out and enjoy the fun. the Dispatcher Shop crews are busy on projects at the museum. The Rock Island Caboose is back in on track 1 with the major rebuild continuing. In front of it is the F-9 that is receiving major attention to brake valves, coupler work and other items that have been noted during operations. On track 2 the Rock Island Combine is receiving an air conditioning unit, to will allow for larger birthday parties. Once the work is completed, the car will be moved over to the track behind the depot with the display car and the model train baggage car. A work train was scheduled for Thanksgiving weekend to address the brush and tree problems along the line north through the golf course. The trees have grown and were rubbing on the cars during the Halloween Train. Train Master Greg Hall has given the okay for the work and crews will use ORM 301 and OKRX 5051 flat car for the trimming crew. Hopefully all work can be completed on that Saturday. South of 30th Street, the city is again working on the Katy Trail. The work is being done and the trail moved to its designed location which was 21 feet west of the built location. The work is being monitored by Track Superintendent Bob Hussey. This will move the ditch away from the end of the ties and allow for improved drainage. Also, just north of NE 16th, approximately 200 ties have been installed replacing bad ties to improve the track conditions. Harry Currie has been working on drainage south of the 23rd Street Bridge on the east side of the track Museum Update by Drake Rice Page 3 to clean out and restore the drainage flow to the south. This is the time of year for our track work to prepare for the operations season that starts in April. With the above listed projects, there are a lot of opportunities for volunteers to participate. Pick a project and join in to help improve our museum. If you have questions, please contact Jim Murray, Stan Hall or Harry Currie. With the Halloween Train passenger count and the Thomas trains during the first of October, the 2012 passenger count remains above 2011. With the last train this year being the Christmas trains, we are hoping for a record number of passengers. The museum is offering the tickets this year over an internet ticket sales operation. You can go to the museum website (www.oklahomarailwaymuseum.org) and link to the ticket turtle to purchase your tickets. As of November 21, there were 510 tickets sold of approximately 1500 tickets available. The end of the year is coming and for those considering financial donations, please give thought to helping the Oklahoma Railway Museum and make your donation to the museum through the Oklahoma City Community Foundation. ORM has been a member for the foundation since 2004 and continuing to build a trust fund to sustain the museum for many years into the future and remember, all donations are tax exempt. Please continue support of your Oklahoma Railway Museum by renewing your membership A letter with return envelope was recently mailed for membership renewel. Please return as quickly as possible. If the letter is misplaced, you can use the form on page 7 of this newsletter.
