22 MASTER OF ARTS IN THEOLOGY At a Glance The Whitworth Master of Arts in Theology Program is designed to develop deeply committed, spiritually disciplined, visionary leaders for the church and society. This degree is ideal for youth ministers, Christian education directors, volunteer coordinators, pastors, elders, deacons, employees of nonprofit organizations, lay ministers, and anyone looking to commit to a journey of personal spiritual achievement. A convenient schedule allows students to enroll in the program without leaving their jobs or having to be residents of Spokane. All courses are offered during Friday/Saturday sessions or in week-long summer residencies. The program is flexible, allowing students to finish in a little over two years or to take courses as they are able. Whitworth’s M.A. in Theology Program is designed around... Classical Theology: rooted in the disciplines of Biblical studies, theology and church history Practical Ministry: based on addressing contemporary ministry needs and challenges Spiritual Formation: eating together and learning together as a praying, worshipping community Courses are taught by faculty members from Whitworth’s highly regarded theology department and by members of the Christian professional community who can offer expertise in key specialties. WEYERHAEUSER CENTER AND COMMUNITY PROGRAMS Whitworth established the Weyerhaeuser Center for Christian Faith & Learning in 1998. The center provides resources, training, and encouragement for clergy and laity. In addition to sponsoring the annual Whitworth Institute of Ministry, the Weyerhaeuser Center provides lectures, workshops, short courses, reading groups, certificates, and other programs designed to renew clergy and lay leaders and to equip them to serve Christ in the church and the world. Certificate in Lay Ministry This program is designed to help train, equip and support men and women to serve more effectively as commissioned lay pastors, Christian education directors, lay ministry coordinators, youth leaders, church administrators, church elders and deacons, church office managers, and a variety of other paid and unpaid leadership positions in local congregations. The certificate program is specifically designed to provide a theoretical framework and foundation in leadership and ministry issues from a Christian perspective; practical skills and tools to lead and manage increasingly complex ministries; and support in ministry and networking opportunities with other church professionals. The course meets one Saturday each month for 10 months (September to June) from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Tuition for the entire program is $750, which includes lunches. All sessions are held at Whitworth University. First session begins Saturday, Sept. 8. The Certificate in Lay Ministry Program is also available online. Pastors’ Reading Group This reading group is designed to provide intellectual stimulation and personal enrichment by engaging participants in significant conversation regarding the nature and purpose of the church as it moves into the 21st century. The reading group meets the first Tuesday of the month from 7-8:30 a.m. Participants provide their own books, and a light breakfast is provided to each participant at no cost. All pastors and interested laypersons are invited to participate. Next group begins October 2012. Institute of Ministry JULY 9-13 Now in its 38th year, the Whitworth Institute of Ministry aims to help bring about the spiritual renewal of church professionals, their families and the churches they serve. The institute offers stimulating speakers, relevant workshops, and inspiring preaching. Faculty members represent both the diversity of the church’s ministry and the depth of its commitment to Christ’s gospel. Included are special programs for children and teens, as well as recreational opportunities and family activities.
