given to the original school of application, or otherwise - any decision being at <strong>Arkwright</strong>’s<br />
discretion.<br />
Inactive Schools<br />
Schools that do not submit candidates for three years become classed as ‘inactive’ and receive<br />
reduced communications from <strong>Arkwright</strong>. Schools are informed by letter when they become<br />
classed as inactive.<br />
Schools that do not submit candidates for a further year after becoming ‘inactive’ are removed<br />
from the Affiliated Schools list. Such schools must re-affiliate if they subsequently wish to become<br />
re-involved with the <strong>Arkwright</strong> Engineering <strong>Scholarships</strong>.<br />
2. ENGINEERING SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION CRITERIA<br />
The <strong>Arkwright</strong> <strong>Scholarships</strong> Trust is committed to ensuring that we inspire creative and talented<br />
young people in the field of engineering and related areas of design; people who are capable of<br />
becoming tomorrow’s leaders – be it a captain of industry, a dedicated engineering team leader or<br />
a world-leading academic researcher.<br />
To be considered for an <strong>Arkwright</strong> Engineering Scholarship:<br />
� Applicants’ school/college must be affiliated to the <strong>Arkwright</strong> <strong>Scholarships</strong> Trust (this<br />
affiliation can occur in parallel to a student application)<br />
� Applicants must be in year 11 (England and Wales), S4 (Scotland) or year 12 (Northern<br />
Ireland) and about to take their GCSEs, Scottish Standards or equivalent examinations<br />
� Applicants must be taking Design & Technology; Craft, Design & Technology Studies;<br />
Engineering; or related subjects at GCSE/Scottish Standard Grade; but they do not need<br />
to be planning to take D&T subjects at A level/Higher<br />
� Applicants should be planning to take A levels, Scottish Highers or equivalent examinations<br />
in subjects relevant a higher apprenticeship or to the study of engineering at university<br />
Students are advised to refer to their preferred university or apprenticeship provider for<br />
specific entry requirements<br />
� Applicants must make a commitment to maths at AS and preferably A2 (England, Wales &<br />
Northern Ireland); Higher or Intermediate 2, preferably Advanced Higher (Scotland)<br />
� Applicants must be actively considering a university degree/higher apprenticeship and<br />
career in engineering or a related area of design.<br />
The International Baccalaureate is an acceptable alternative to A levels and Scottish Highers and<br />
should preferably be taken to Higher Level.<br />
If students leave full-time education, change career aspiration away from engineering/design, or<br />
elect to drop AS Maths, after they have been offered a Scholarship in July but before the formal<br />
Awards Ceremonies in the autumn they must immediately notify the <strong>Arkwright</strong> Schools and<br />
Scholars Administrator in writing (e-mail is sufficient), giving an explanation of the reasons and<br />
stating their proposed career route. Each case will be reviewed on an individual basis by<br />
<strong>Arkwright</strong> and the Sponsor. Possible outcomes of such reviews, made at the absolute discretion<br />
of <strong>Arkwright</strong>, are:<br />
� The Scholarship may be withdrawn completely and the student loses the right to say that<br />
they were awarded an <strong>Arkwright</strong> Engineering Scholarship.<br />
� In some circumstances, the student may still continue as an <strong>Arkwright</strong> Engineering Scholar<br />
and the School and Scholar will continue to receive their financial awards.<br />
