Page 4—Thursday, Jan. 12, 2012, The Callaway Courier Boys pull out OT win, lose next two South Loup boys basketball had it’s ups and downs coming out of the Christmas break going 1-2 in a grueling week. The Bobcats started with an amazing comeback, 56-50 overtime victory over Amherst (7-3) on Jan. 3, in which Aaron Stryker scored 34 points. A visit to Sandhills/Thedford (9-2) was not quite so dramatic as the Knights kept Bobcat scoring down in a 46-33 loss. Burwell’s (10-1) only loss came at the hands of topranked Ravenna. The Longhorns used their nimble height to roll over the Bobcats 55-39 in a home game Saturday. South Loup (4-4) has come through a pretty tough schedule and Head Coach Jeff Cole said he is glad they don’t have anymore Burwells on their schedule. The rest is more doable. The Bobcats will be back on the road with a contest at Maxwell (4-7) on Friday the 13th and then head back to Lincoln County for a go at a quality Brady team (9-1). Mullen (6-4) comes to Arnold Tuesday for a makeup game and then the Bobcats hit the road Thursday for a shot at Litchfield/Ansley (3-7) at Litchfield. Cole said if the Bobcats play like they did in the first quarter against Burwell, he likes their chances against anyone left on the schedule. South Loup vs. Burwell It certainly looked good as South Loup got up early leading 11-7. Eamon Schwarz put down a three and a two while Tanner Cline added four points on two buckets. But shortly into the second period, Burwell was up 22-11. South Loup managed to keep pace until the Longhorns rattled off a run shooting over defenders and using such unheard plays at this level as the alley-oop where the point guard “shoots” toward a streaking post on the way up who catches and puts it home. The Bobcats saw this several times. Meanwhile, Burwell kept Stryker under wraps and out of rhythm on the outside. Schwarz and Stryker each finished with 7 points while Stryker also led rebounding with six for South Loup. Burwell out-rebounded the Bobcats 35-25. “I thought other than rebounds, our kids played really, really well. We just lost the ball game. And when they can shoot and move like that, what are you going to do?” No shame in losing to a good club like that. Of note, the Bobcats held Burwell to its second lowest point total of the season. Ravenna held the Longhorns to 44. South Loup at S/T Another tall team that was able to shoot over South Loup defenders, said the coach. The Knights jumped out early 14-4 but led just 17-10 at the half and then out-scored South Loup 29-23 to close out the game. Rebounding was again an issue as the Knights more than doubled up on the boards 50-23. Stryker led Bobcat scoring with 12 points. “The kids gave a good effort but they just couldn’t keep them off the glass,” Cole said. South Loup at Amherst Now if the last two games were a struggle, the overtime win versus Amherst was amazing. Stryker went 6-of-8 from 3 point range, sank 8-0f-10 free throws and scored 34 points to bring the Bobcats back from 47-40 to tie the game at 50 to put it OT. “We played a really good game,” Cole said of the Bobcats. “They (Amherst) were a good ball club and the shots we made were all contested. That was probably the most complete game we’ve played and it doesn’t hurt that Aaron shoots 10-of-14 from the floor, either. He was definitely in the zone.” South Loup jumped out early but lost intensity in the next two periods falling behind 41-36 at the end of three. It then mounted a 13-8 rally to put it into overtime and then blanked the Broncos 6-0. Cole said that usually the first team to score in OT has the advantage and that proved the case here. South Loup hit 14-of-19 free throws for 74% of which Justin Ross was clutch hitting 5-of-6 including three in OT. He had nine points overall. JV loses to Burwell Burwell JV surged 15-5 in the second quarter to down the South Loup boys JV 37-27 Saturday. Layton Dockweiler led South Loup scoring with 7 points. The meet marked the return of state-returning 120 pounder Wyatt Eggleston who was inactive due to injury. He wrestled unattached and came away with fourth place in his first meet of the season. His only loss of the day was to Wyatt Schake of Amherst who pinned Dockweiler in 1:42 of the championship match. the Bobcats 57-33 on Saturday, Sandhills/Thedford (9-2) took them down 51-22 on the Lady Knight home court Thursday and Amherst (7-3) rolled past 44-18 on Jan. 3. Head coach Abe Hinman said it was a tough week playing three games back-to-back with just one partial practice. “You have to kind of let them get their legs back under them.” “We had three pretty tough teams. I felt that early on we really didn’t play all that well but, for some reason, they played with a little bit more passion on Saturday, which was good to see. With the long week, had they decided to not play, it could have gotten pretty ugly.” South Loup (1-8) will have another long road haul this week starting with Maxwell (7-5) on Friday the 13th, and then right back to area Saturday with a tilt against state-rated Brady (10-1). This coming Thursday, Jan. 19, the Bobcats will be at Litchfield (4-6). Oh, and state-rated Mullen (9-1) will come to Arnold for another makeup game this Tuesday. Others scoring points for the Bobcats were Jacob Mason (120), Kyle Pierce (145), and Ian Beshaler (182). It was a Bronco kind of a day as Amherst rolled up 246 points to take the team championship while Plainview was got all the shots they wanted and scored in double figures in every period. Hinman noted it was the offensive glass where the Longhorns really hurt the Bobcats with a 27-9 advantage and a 43-30 margin overall. Yet, South Loup seemed to get some scoring under way in the fourth quarter hitting 7-of- 10 free throws and making some shots down the stretch. The coach said they have been practicing free throws a lot and it’s starting to show. “That’s been another positive thing,” he said. “The girls have been coming in the mornings to shoot free throws and it’s paying off.” They just need to get to the line more often, he added. Shayla Dockweiler came off the bench to score 8 points, including a steal with a breakaway lay-up at the end and Michaela Weverka finished with 8 boards and Jordan Rush had 7. The Bobcats also cut their turnovers down to 24. South Loup at S/T Up 35-10 early, Sandhills/ Thedford cruised the rest of the way. Rush and Shayla Dockweiler both led the Bobcats with six points but Rush also brought down 10 boards. South Loup was also 4-of-6 at the line but got only nine shots from the field. South Loup at Amherst Up 40-12 at the half, Amherst called off the dogs in the final two periods scoring no points in the third and just four in the fourth. South Loup simply struggled to score putting up just 8-of-33 from the field and 2-of-8 from the line. For all that, Rush still had 10 rebounds and 7 points while Weverka recorded 8 boards. JV beats Burwell South Loup JV girls weathered an 15 point first-quarter Burwell second with 141.5 points and Medicine Valley amassed 127 points for third. South Loup finished 14th out of 18 teams, including the combined scoring of unattached wrestlers. “We had 13 guys wrestling for us so we were finally pretty healthy as a team,” Coleman said. He said it was a tough meet but thought much of the team “wrestled on its heels.” “Hopefully this weekend we will get some good wins and some confidence,” he said. The Bobcats will compete in the SEM Invite at Sumner starting at 1 p.m., this Friday. On Saturday, they journey to Shelton starting at 10 a.m. Amherst Invite Team scores: 1. Amherst 246, 2.
