Castillo’s 25 points leads Lady Dogs past Dumas By RYAN BLAKE THURMAN Herald Sports Editor DUMAS — Laura Castillo has put together some masterful performances this season, and Friday night’s District 3-4A opener against the Dumas Demonettes was another one to list on her resume. After starting out a little lethargic in the fi rst quarter, Plainview’s senior point guard provided the spark that helped the No. 17 Lady Dogs get the district race started on the right foot with a 52-34 rout of Dumas. Castillo put up 25 points, gathered fi ve rebounds, had four steals and handed out three assists. But Castillo, who doesn’t keep up with her own personal records (“That’s the least of my worries. As long as we win.”), dismissed it all as a regular night’s work. “I think if the team needs me I’m going to have to be around (25 points a game),” Castillo said. “But if everybody else steps up, I won’t need to be around that number.” Perhaps unfortunately, the Lady Dogs (12-3, 1-0) defi nitely needed her to put up one of her highest scoring totals of the year. In the fi rst quarter, the Lady Dogs looked out of sorts and a little frantic. WHITHARRAL — The Plainview Christian Lady Eagles defeated Wellman-Union 55- 27 Saturday to win the consolation championship at the Whitharral Invitational. With a 20-13 lead at the half, the Lady Eagles decided to turn the defensive pressure up a notch and build a big lead in the third quarter. And it couldn’t have gone any better. The Lady Eagles (5-3) shut out Wellman-Union and scored 20 points to clinch the win. “We talked at halftime and our defense was already creating a lot of opportunities, and we tried to turn it up and take “We’ve got to come out and compete harder,” Hagerman said. “We didn’t compete as hard as we needed to (against Randall).” Jaylon Jackson led Plainview with 16 points, and Quaveien Thomas and Avysh Hervey each added 11. The Panthers made a valiant comeback attempt in the fourth quarter, scoring 16 points while holding PCHS to only four, but it wasn’t enough.
