Here we can see a lovely emerald crystal in calcite. Note the prismatic crystal, which is hexagonal in structure. Emeralds are a member of the beryl family, obtaining their unique colour from trace amounts of chromium and vanadium. They can be green or blue green, but Colombian emeralds are unique in that they exhibit a complete lack of iron. (The pyrite often found nearby seems to have attracted it all.) 34
