President’s Message DeAR FRIeNDS: SUNY Delhi’s stature continues to climb, thanks to a series of accolades at the state, national and international levels. Consider these impressive achievements: Rated in the Top 50 Baccalaureate Colleges in the North, according to U.S. News and World Report’s Guide to America’s Best Colleges, for the third consecutive year; Named a “Best College to Work For” by The Chronicle of Higher Education, the industry’s leading trade publication; For the first time in Delhi history, a faculty member was named a Fulbright Scholar; Fall enrollment reached an alltime record of 3,183 students; More than 6,000 students applied for enrollment, another Delhi record; Retention improved to 63.9 percent, an increase of nearly seven percent since 2006; Rated in the Top 10 in 28 categories of the 2009 SUNY Student Opinion Survey, including key measures of academic quality such as quality of instruction, academic advising, acquiring the knowledge and skills needed for a career, and developing mentoring relationships with faculty and staff. The Student Opinion Survey carries particular significance because it confirms that our students believe they are receiving an exceptional educational experience at SUNY Delhi. And that experience extends beyond the classroom. Students rated Delhi in the Top 10 of SUNY in community service, athletic and recreation facilities, intramural and recreational programs, and health services. The abundance of good news is tempered by New York’s ongoing financial crisis. SUNY Delhi has seen nearly $4 million cut from its operating budget since June 2008. State operating support now accounts for only 22 percent of our operating budget. In the 1980’s, it was nearly 80 percent. We are working diligently to close a $1.7 million budget deficit in 2010–2011. These unprecedented budget reductions make it extremely challenging to continue to provide the quality educational programs and services that our students demand and deserve. SUNY Delhi has been very entrepreneurial in its decision making, which provides us with a strategic advantage over many of our competitors. We have launched new program initiatives ranging from the online RN to BSN to expanding the delivery of baccalaureate programs at community colleges in New York State. We instituted an aggressive campus-wide energy reduction program last year that saved more than $800,000. We have also been forced to increase student fees to cover basic operating costs. We are turning more frequently to our affiliated organizations—CADI and College Foundation—for increased student support. We have a dedicated core of Delhi alumni and friends who generously support our student scholarship programs and services through annual donations to the College Foundation. Their generosity is highlighted in the Honor Roll of Donors section of this Annual Report. Rising tuition and fees for students, combined with state budget cuts, make it imperative that we increase alumni involvement and support, and I will be actively involved in that effort in 2010. As you look through this Annual Report, which focuses on the college’s strategic objectives, I believe the accomplishments of our faculty, staff and students will impress you. Their achievements and personal investments in student success have helped SUNY Delhi become a leader in the SUNY system and a model for innovation in preparing the future leaders of New York State. Annual Report of the President enhance Academic excellence SUNY Delhi’s report card continues to shine. For the third consecutive year, Delhi was ranked among the Top 50 Baccalaureate Colleges in the North by U.S. News and World Report magazine. The ranking highlighted that Delhi scores well among its peers in freshmen retention rates and selectivity. Also, the 2009 State University Student Opinion Survey placed Delhi among the SUNY elite ranking in the Top 10 in 28 categories, including academic quality, community service, advising or mentoring relationships with faculty and staff, and acquiring the skills needed to move on after graduation. Other examples of academic excellence at Delhi include: Professional Honors — Dr. Linnea Goodwin Burwood, Associate Professor of Liberal Arts and Sciences, was named SUNY Delhi’s first Fulbright Scholar and has embarked on a one-year study of the Russian Revolution… Five faculty and staff received the prestigious SUNY Chancellor’s Award including: Emmanuel Adjei, University Police Officer I, Excellence in Classified Service; Dr. Mary Pat Lewis, Nursing and Allied Health Department Chair, Excellence in Faculty Service; Dr. Kirby Olson, Associate Professor of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Excellence for Scholarship and Creative Activities; Dr. William J. Raynor, III, Professor, Excellence in Teaching; and Mary E. Wake, Assistant Director of Counseling Services, Excellence in Professional Service…Bob Backus, Director of Athletics, was named to the NJCAA Cross Country Hall of Fame…Marty Greenfield, Director of Student Activities, was awarded the 2008 Lifetime Achievement award by the Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities. Left-Right: Associate Professor Ken Pyle ’69 earned a Fellowship from the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science to tour research facilities throughout the United Kingdom and observe the latest in research techniques. He also earned the 2009 Purina Mills Laboratory Animal Technician of the Year Award…Thomas Recinella, Associate Professor of Culinary Arts, was awarded the American Culinary Federation President’s Medallion. Left–Right: Michael Ford, a junior in the Golf Course Management: Superintendent program, was one of only 17 students in the nation to be selected for a USGA/Green Section internship… Delhi’s Freshman Seminar, which has increased student success, was recognized by SUNY as a 2008 Outstanding Student Affairs Program, earning first place in the academic and student affairs collaboration category…Theresa Molloy ’80, Vice President of the Global Corporate Client Group for the New York Stock exchange/euronet, hosted President Candace Vancko (center) and Joel Smith, executive Director of the College Foundation, during a visit to the exchange. Student Honors — Culinary Arts students earned nearly 70 medals last year at such major competitions as the Annual Société Culinaire Philanthropique held in conjunction with the annual International Hotel/Motel & Restaurant Show, the National Ice Carving Association Collegiate Invitational, and the National Ice Carving Association Championship. Senior Brianne Slocum was one of three finalists for the 2009 American Culinary Federation Student Chef of the Year Award…Culinary students were invited to help train Army chefs for the U.S. Army Culinary Competition at Fort Lee, VA… Electrical Construction and Controls major Thomas Lenz captured first place in the Skills USA regional contest and placed in the Top 10 at the national competition in Kansas City, MO …Cross Country and Track Standout Chris Mason became the first Delhi athlete to be honored as NJCAA Male Student Athlete of the Year. Liberal Arts and Residence Life teamed up for a new approach to Freshman Seminar, designing two sections especially for Liberal Arts majors residing in O’Connor Hall. Courses were taught in O’Connor with students receiving additional support from peer mentors and Residence Life staff. An honors program for students pursuing two-year and four-year degrees was established. To be eligible, students must maintain a 3.3 G.P.A. or better, and upon graduation, they are recognized with an honors distinction on their transcripts. Perkins Grants totaling $243,311 are funding online instruction and retention initiatives for students, as well as academic equipment and supplies for the Veterinary Science Technology, Culinary Arts, Automotive Technology, Electrical Construction and Instrumentation, Building Technologies, Welding Technology, and Science programs. The O’Connor Center for Community Service has implemented a service learning fellows program that identifies faculty who integrate volunteerism in their course work. Hospitality Professor Rick Golding implemented a service initiative as part of his Banquet and Function Management course and BSN Professor Debra Adelman incorporated a service learning component into her online healthcare policy course. College Advancement and Hospitality Management co-sponsored a campus visit by Michel Escoffier, great-grandson of Georges Auguste Escoffier, the father of classical French cooking. 2 3
