Key issue: High quality research and development are essential to underpin effective action and ensure that<br />

breakthroughs in the understanding of healthcare associated infection are rapidly translated into benefits for<br />

patients.<br />

• A national research strategy will be formulated to address gaps in current scientific and clinical<br />

knowledge about how to reduce healthcare associated infections.<br />

• The potential of molecular methods to improve infection control will be explored and<br />

exploited.<br />

• Research funding partners will be asked to contribute to an integrated research programme.<br />

• A research network for healthcare associated infection will be established and maintained.<br />

• Epidemiological modelling techniques will be used more widely to assess healthcare associated<br />

infection control strategies.<br />

• A rapid review process will be established to assess new procedures and products for which<br />

claims of effectiveness are made of their ability to prevent or control healthcare associated<br />

infection.<br />

• A project will be established to determine the feasibility for vaccines to prevent healthcare<br />

associated infection.<br />
