Action Area Seven: Research and
Development
Action
Key issue: High quality research and development are essential to underpin effective action and ensure that
breakthroughs in the understanding of healthcare associated infection are rapidly translated into benefits for
patients.
• A national research strategy will be formulated to address gaps in current scientific and clinical
knowledge about how to reduce healthcare associated infections.
• The potential of molecular methods to improve infection control will be explored and
exploited.
• Research funding partners will be asked to contribute to an integrated research programme.
• A research network for healthcare associated infection will be established and maintained.
• Epidemiological modelling techniques will be used more widely to assess healthcare associated
infection control strategies.
• A rapid review process will be established to assess new procedures and products for which
claims of effectiveness are made of their ability to prevent or control healthcare associated
infection.
• A project will be established to determine the feasibility for vaccines to prevent healthcare
associated infection.
