The Evopress has been designed to make the most of tight turning rear-steer 6x2 chassis and has a significantly reduced rear hopper overhang to eliminate hopper swing-out when cornering – one of the biggest drawbacks of a rear-steer. The demo vehicle displayed at the Innovation Day events was matched to an Otto Compact bin-lifter. Cynics might suggest Faun is keen to find an alternative to the purpose-built narrow track chassis models available elsewhere on the UK market because the company doesn’t have a narrow track option available. Fair point, but this is a more complex argument than turning circle statistics! narrow track chassis take up less carriageway width while loading at the kerbside, which is oddly a major bonus seldom mentioned by those who make Sandown Park Racecourse, Surrey 17/4/2011 them! Besides, Faun does offer other compact solutions and the Innovation Days were therefore a useful guide for Faun engineers to assess customers preferences. One of the more interesting features on show at the Innovation Days was the new universal, pre-drilled galvanised subframe mounting system. This is a concept pioneered by multilift (on hooklifts) and should help speed up delivery times and enhance service life on RCVs. Also shared across the entire product range is the Faun Control System, which, in addition to helping to improve efficiency and reduce driver stress, has an added safety feature: it reduces the need for all sorts of bolt-on screens and devices from other outside suppliers. Is that important? Ask the fleet manager who had his fleet wiped out by a depot fire started by faulty third party-added wiring in an RCV cab some years ago! Integration is the only way to go in the future. Cynically, you may be asking, “what possible benefit are such events likely to have to my Georg Sandkuhler in demonstration mode career?” The answer is simple. From the manufacturer’s side – in this case Faun Zoeller – an event held under CIWM Business Club auspices has been proven to be an ideal way to meet the leading professionals in the waste and recycling industry. It costs a great deal of money for companies to attend major indoor “set piece” exhibitions, but, on a crowded show stand full of people, the really important potential customer can be easily missed. Small can be more successful. Key Contacts FROM YOUR perspective as a visiting waste industry professional, there’s an equally useful bonus – CIWm Business Club events can be targeted to specific industry sectors, geographic areas or user groups, so everyone who is invited can gain access to the people with the right answers to your technical questions. At all five Faun Zoeller Innovation Days it was interesting to spot little groups of people engaged in 8 August 2011 MVO 7
8 conversation and it was the very fact that Faun Zoeller had flown-in top product specialists like Helmut Schmeh (the highly knowledgable managing director of the Faun Viatec sweeper division, or Georg Sandkuhler who heads up the R&D team looking at issues such as the Hybrid drives) that made the Innovation Days such a success. Under normal circumstances it just wouldn’t be possible to have access to such key “behind the scenes” people. So how much of a success were the events? Successful enough for the top people at Faun Zoeller in Germany to be impressed, by all accounts. In fact, I overheard them discussing how such a relaxed style of event might even be replicated in their own country! What A Result OVER 250 visitors made it to the events, spread over the five venues at Falkirk (football stadium), Wigan (home to rugby league and Premier league football), Sandown Park (horse racing), Celtic manor MVO August 2011 Well played! According to Simon, there’s more than a “sporting chance” the company will use CIWM Business Club as a launch pad for new products next year. “It really has been a success and we’re delighted with the contacts we’ve made on so many different levels. We have been able to keep-up contact with our existing customers, while at the same time Villa Park, Aston Villa FC, Birmingham 20 May 2011 making new contacts. But the surprise bonus for us has been the chance to make new business-tobusiness contacts as well. “CIWM Business Club really works as a forum for new ideas,” he added. So there you have it. to continue the sporting theme right to the final whistle, you might say that the Innovation Days were a “right result”.
