"I know the aeronautics bureau

airports," he said.
As to Canton operating the airport,
he said, "I don't think we'd
be interested, but we'd always be
willing to listen."
Rises from dead
In the summer, the effort to buy
the airport — then led by the Federal
Aviation Administration —
appeared dead. "It's over as far as
we're concerned," said the FAA
Detroit airports district manager
in August.
That was after Canton and
Plymouth Township officials
sought strict safeguards against
expansion and other demands in
their application for a federal
grant to buy the airport.
The FAA said it hadn't beforeaccepted
such provisions.

the state besides Plymouth-Canton
has the local opposition been
so strong against government
buying a local airport. Jackson
said officials "have put ourselves
on stage, answered in writing every
question on this issue," yet a

When airport opponents
learned last week that the state
Department of Transportation
planned to buy the airport, they
contacted Vorva.
Purchase defended
"We strongly believe that most
of the opposition to the airport
comes from a few individuals in
the community who continue to
raise unfounded concerns to stir
up the general public," said Warren
Hoyt, chairman of the Michigan
Aeronuatics Commission,
"such as claims that the airport
would be expanded to handle jet
aircraft and that it would be a
drain on local tax money to support
and operate the airport.
"Both of these allegations are
untrue. However, once they've
been alleged, they are very difficult
to defend," Hoyt said.
Plymouth Township Supervisor
Kathleen Keen-McCarthy
said news that the state would
pursue an airport purchase is "a
shock."
"I like having a small airport in
our community, but I don't think
the tax dollars should be paying
for it or supporting it," she said.
"I've been trying to get through
to MDOT and to our legal counsel,
to find out what pptipns we
have," she said.
Jackson said that once the
state buys the airport, with the
help of federal grant money, the
airport would be turned over to a
local government such as Wayne
County or an interested municipal
government, to operate it.
