coloured mountains and black obsidian ridges. This tramp through to Porsmork is considered one <strong>of</strong> the world’s greatest<br />

walks. Reach Hrafntinnusker mountain hut in the later afternoon where we spend the night. Approx 4 - 5 hours walking,<br />

12 kms. L.D.<br />

Day 16. Tue 19 th July. Trekking<br />

Descend into the gullies <strong>of</strong> Jokultungur passing hundreds <strong>of</strong> steaming hot springs and mud pools. Enjoy extensive views<br />

to the south towards Alftavatn (Swan Lake) and Myrdalsjokull (jokull = glacier) and Eyjafjallajokull. Overnight at<br />

Alftavatn hut after 4 – 5 hours walking, 12 kms. B.L.D.<br />

Day 17. Wed 20 th July. Trekking<br />

Passing the foot <strong>of</strong> the green conical volcano <strong>of</strong> Storasula, we enter the black deserts <strong>of</strong> Maelifellssandur. We now head<br />

towards Hattfel, another ancient volcano and visit the magnificent Markarfljot canyon, almost 200m deep. The overnight<br />

stop is at Botnar hut. Approx’ 6 – 7 hours walking, 15 kms. B.L.D.<br />

Day 18. Thu 21 st July. Trekking<br />

Walk up and down through the small valleys and gullies <strong>of</strong> Emstrur with the great Myrdalsjokull icecap only a couple <strong>of</strong><br />

kms away. At the end <strong>of</strong> the day the vegetation grows thicker and higher as we descend into Porsmork’s (the woods <strong>of</strong><br />

Thor) green valleys filled with arctic birch and colourful flowers. Overnight in one <strong>of</strong> the huts in Porsmork. Approx’ 6 – 7<br />

hours walking, 15 kms. B.L.D.<br />

Day 19. Fri 22 nd July. Finish trekking and return to Reykjavik<br />

Spend the morning in Porsmork exploring this area. See Songhellir cave (Song cave) and climb the small peak <strong>of</strong><br />

Valahnukur for magnificent views. In the afternoon we catch the bus back to Reykjavik and arrive early evening. Transfer<br />

to our hostel accommodation. B.L.<br />

Day 20. Sat 23 rd July. Reykjavik free day<br />

Lots to see and do as described earlier. Possibly join forces and hire a car to visit Geysir, Thingvellir and Gullfoss, or you<br />

could take a ‘Golden Circle’ bus tour. Another option is to transfer to High Places Greenland Tour.<br />

Day 21. Sun 24 th July. Depart Iceland<br />

Transfer to Keflavik International Airport for your onward flight, if not staying on in Reykjavik or joining the Greenland<br />

tour.
