Neuman '43GM,Joseph Chamberlain Wilson and Marie Curran Wilson Professor and former chairman ofradiation biology and biophysics, and an international expert in the biochemistry ofbones, died suddenly and unexpectedly onJanuary 4. He was sixtyone. President Sproull said, "The University comm unity is deeply saddened to learn ofDr. Neuman's untimely death. His most obvious contribution was as chairman of the Faculty Letters (continuedjrom insidejront cover) L. Alfreda Hill Two tributes Ralph W. Helmkamp I am grateful that the late Alfreda Hill was my teacher and friend for more than thirty years. She was a unique person, who will affect eternity. No one can say where her influence will end. Julian Kaplow '50 Rochester As a former student ofthe late Ralph Helmkamp, long-time professor oforganic chemistry at this University, I would like to pay tribute to the excellence ofhis teaching and the great enthusiasm which he had for his subject. While I feel that the development of the River Campus and the subsequent move to coeducation were great advancements for the University, as a member ofthe class of 1949, College for Women, I resent the implication in the Fall issue ("The Great Removal Project") ofbeing sooty and smelling cabbage smells. The Prince Street Campus was a nice place to be. Juliet Tillema Brace '49 Short Hills, New Jersey The reference to cabbage smells and soot stains at the Prince Street Campus originated during the early 1920s 40 Senate Steering Committee and Research Policy Committee. In addition, over and over again his leadership made the difference between the success and failure ofa number ofUniversity projects. " Dr. Frank E. Young, dean ofthe School of Medicine and Dentistry and director ofthe Medical Center, noted that "for decades William Neuman has been an outstanding leader not only in his field of research on bone but also as a statesman in the Medical Center. "As chairman ofradiation biology and biophysics he helped to build the field of biological science to a position ofexcellence within the University." A native of Petoskey, Michigan, Neuman graduated in 1940 from Michigan State University. Hejoined the Rochester faculty as an instructor in biochemistry in 1944 after receiving Prince Street Campus, 1940s: a pleasant place to be in the columns ojThe Campus, the men students' weekly, and can probably be ascribed to undergraduate hyperbole. It was included in the Review article as an illustration ojthe lordly dismissal..oj the sensibilities oj jemale students by their male counterparts during that period. Prince Street was indeed a pleasant place to be. The editor, jor one, will happily attest that during the jouryears she spent there her complexion remained his doctorate from the University. In the 1940s Dr. Neuman helped create the field ofhealth physics (the protection ofpeople exposed to radiation, such as that received in the Manhattan Project). He was one ofa team of scientists that studied the effects ofspace travel on the muscle and bones ofastronauts Frank Borman andJames Lovell during the fourteenday flight ofGemini 7 in 1965. Neuman served as a visiting professor and lecturer at universities and scientific institutes across the United States and around the world. He was the author or co-author of more than 200 scientific publications and winner of numerous professional awards. Those who wish may contribute to the William F. Neuman Scholarship Fund, University ofRochester Medical Center. unblemished (by soot anyhow), and she can recall smelling no urban scent stronger than that oj dandelions-Ed.
