Sweet Lou’s Day One Success
Four teams entered the first day of games hoping to get off to a fast start, and by the end of the day
one team stood alone at the top: Sweet Lou’s with a 2-0 record. The Clamdiggers and Aug’s Dawgs
are in the middle of the pack, both with records of 1-1, while M&M’s bring up the rear without a
victory after day one. Sweet Lou’s, coached by Lou Klimchock and Ed Sedar, scored 17 runs, while
belting out 23 hits in Tuesday’s games. Their 17 runs scored is more than all other teams combined
(15), while only allowing one run. While Wes Matthews (Clamdiggers) tops the leader board with a
.800 batting average, five hitters from Sweet Lou’s have three or more hits and are batting .500 or
above, led by Ron Quiñones and Doug Johnsen who are second and third in batting with a .750
and .667 average, respectively. With Johnsen on the mound, Sweet Lou’s won their first game in
convincing fashion with a 7-0 victory over Aug’s Dawgs. The Dawgs were able to salvage a win in
their afternoon contest over the Clamdiggers, 6-3. M&M’s first day was tough, as they were shut out
by the Clamdiggers 5-0, and almost had the same fate in the afternoon game against Sweet Lou’s
before scraping up one run, What will today bring? The forecast calls for rain, but if it holds off, we’ll
know if Sweet Lou’s was able to stay undefeated and if M&M’s was able to get off the schneid.
Hall of Fame Comes Knocking For “Rock”
Bill and his father, Pete Schroeder Bill, circa 1978
No, Bill didn’t quite make it to Cooperstown, but came pretty close in proximity (318.46 miles to be exact).
Bill, along with nine others, was inducted into the Cape Cod Baseball League (CCBL) Hall of Fame last November.
He spent the 1978 Cape Cod season catching for the Hyannis Mets and left an indelible mark in the
league. Bill ended the season by hitting 15 home runs which set a still standing single-season record for most
by a Mets player and Cape Cod League catcher. He also led the league in RBI (38), which helped him become
the seventh player to lead the CCBL in two of the three Triple Crown categories. During an 18 day span from
July 12-29, Bill had a 14-game hitting streak, where he batted .392, hit seven home runs and drove in 19.
He also earned Player of the Week honors (July 14-20) when he batted .556, slugged five home runs, scored
and drove in nine runs each. Put all those numbers together, and the post-season honors definitely followed.
Bill received the All-League catcher, Outstanding Pro Prospect and Most Valuable Player awards. His hitting
didn’t stop there, as he batted .308 with one homer and seven RBI during the playoffs. In this one magical
season where the Mets went 31-11 and captured the league title, it’s no wonder you also have a player who
was voted as the first-team catcher on the CCBL 1970s All-Decade team.
Also inducted in to the Hall of Fame with Bill, was former Brewers outfielder, Greg Vaughn. Vaughn, who
spent two seasons playing for the Cotuit Kettleers, led them to two league championships in 1984 and 1985,
while garnering MVP honors in 1985.
We all knew that Bill was Hall of Fame material in our eyes, but now he has the hardware to prove it.
CONGRATULATIONS, BILL!
A special thank you to James Garner, Director of Public Relations and broadcasting for the CCBL for supplying the stats.
