President’s Message
coMe skate with us in evergreen!
The Calgary Evergreen Community Association [“CECA”] is excited to announce that
we have partnered with the City of Calgary Parks, and will be maintaining an outdoor
skating rink this season.
Dear Calgary Evergreen Community,
We, the Calgary Evergreen Community Association and the City of Calgary Parks South Division are pleased to announce that we
have partnered together to run a temporary ice skating rink this winter at the corner of Everridge Drive and Everoak Drive (see
map on page 7).
The initial set-up and flooding of the rink will be undertaken by the City of Calgary Parks but the success of program is dependent
on volunteers to help maintain the skating rink. The Community Association is organizing volunteers for the rink. If you would like
to volunteer, please contact our “rink boss” Jodine Williams (jodine@myceca.ca).
Outdoor skating rinks in Calgary are weather dependent and are typically open December through February. Regular flooding and
snow removal are required to maintain rink condition. Please stay off the ice while it is being cleaned or cleared of snow.
The outdoor rink is for pleasure skating only. The rink will not be lighted or
supervised. Helmets are recommended. Due to proximity of houses and
cars, hockey is strongly discouraged. Slapshots, windows, and windshields
do not mix.
For additional information on our newly adopted rink, please visit our
website www.myceca.ca or contact Jodine.
Your Board of Directors is excited to bring an ice rink to Evergreen. Please
enjoy the fresh air this winter by lacing up your skates and enjoying our first
outdoor skating rink! We hope to see you out there!
Sincerely,
Trevor Wekel, President
PS: Your membership of $20 in the Calgary Evergreen Community Association can help us keep this exciting project going in future
Services
help police stop vehicle prowlers
It’s not only vehicles thieves
are interested in - it’s also
what’s inside them.
The Calgary Police Service
suggests taking a few simple
preventive measures to help
protect your vehicle from being
broken into, or even stolen:
• Take your purse or
wallet with you — never leave them in the vehicle (thieves
know all your favourite hiding places).
• Always lock your vehicle doors.
• Don’t leave your vehicle running unattended, even for a
few seconds (this is an invitation to steal your vehicle’s
contents or the vehicle itself).
• Store valuables and shopping bags out of sight within the
vehicle.
• When you’re shopping, it’s best to keep your shopping
with you (if you drop it off at your vehicle and then return
to the store or mall, it can alert thieves that there may be
something worth stealing in your vehicle). If you need to
drop off your shopping, move your vehicle to a different
parking spot before going back into the stores.
• Take removable stereo face plates or stereos with you
when you leave the vehicle.
• Don’t leave CDs in your car, as they are untraceable if
stolen.
• Don’t leave anything in your vehicle overnight.
Shopping centre parking lots are common areas for car prowling
and theft, so many malls employ security guards to deter
potential thieves; however, thieves also target vehicles parked
in residential areas. You can further decrease your chances of
becoming a victim by parking in a well-lit area and using an antitheft
device such as a car alarm or steering wheel locking device.
Prowlers who see that your car is protected are more likely to
move on to a car that doesn’t have security features.
If you become a victim of a car prowling, it’s important to call the
police immediately —regardless of the extent of loss or insurance
coverage. These incidents are rarely isolated, and thieves often
work for several days or weeks in a row. Early information can
help police identify areas of concern and catch the culprits.
To report an incident, visit your local district office. District phone
numbers can be found on the Calgary Police Service website at
www.calgarypolice.com/districts. You can also call the Calgary
Police Service general number at 403-266-1234 and provide police
with as much information as you can: where and when the incident
occurred, what damage was done and what was taken (including a
list of serial numbers and descriptions of the stolen items).
sledding safety
Alberta Health Services, EMS would like to
remind parents and children of some basic
sledding safety tips as the winter season
continues. Sledding injuries can result
from collisions with stationary objects
such as trees and rocks or with other
people on the hill. Unprotected falls
can result in injury if you lose control
at high speeds. Everyone is at risk – especially children.
Educate your family how to stay safe by following these simple
reminders and have a fun day on the toboggan hill.
Equipment
• Ensure your sled is in good condition. Do not use sleds
with broken parts, sharp edges, or splits in the material.
• Currently, there are no helmets designed specifically for
sledding. However children should wear a properly fitted
helmet designed for high impact collisions, such as hockey,
cycling, or climbing helmets.
Hazards
• Avoid hills that are too steep, or too icy – you can lose
control very quickly.
• Choose hills free of obstacles such as trees, rocks, utility
poles, or fences.
• Be mindful of clothing that contains drawstrings, or loose
clothing, such as scarves, which can present a choking
hazard if they become caught or snagged.
Plan ahead
• Dress warmly in layers and anticipate weather changes.
• Consider bringing extra sets of gloves and toques to
exchange wet garments for dry ones.
• Take breaks to warm up out of the cold.
• Ensure frostbite hasn’t affected any exposed skin.
• Even when properly protected from the elements, the
finger tips, toes, ears, the tip of the nose, and other high
points on the face such as the forehead and cheek bones
can be affected by frostbite.
• If frost bite has occurred, treat it by first removing the
individual out of the cold environment. Gently warm the
affected skin by placing a warm hand over it or by placing
the affected part in warm water (not hot; ~41°C max.)
until re-warmed.
People don't notice whether it's
winter or summer when they're
happy. ~ Anton Chekhov
Lock It or Lose It!
Fast, easy tips to
protect your vehicle
against theft.
It takes just seconds for a criminal
to break into your vehicle.
Less than a minute later, your
valuables — even your entire
vehicle — could be gone. It can
take weeks to settle an auto
theft insurance claim, and since
claims are usually based on your
vehicle’s value rather than its
replacement cost, it could leave
you thousands of dollars short —
all for the sake of a few moments of your time.
Since vehicle theft is often a crime of opportunity, the Calgary
Police Service recommends these measures to make your
vehicle less attractive to thieves.
• Lock it up. Close the windows, lock the doors and the
trunk, and take your keys with you — never leave your
vehicle unlocked, even for the few minutes it takes to duck
into a store or run back into the house. And don’t hide a
key on the vehicle — criminals know ALL the hiding spots.
• Turn it off. Never leave your vehicle idling alone, even if
you lock the doors. It costs the environment in emissions,
and it could cost you when a criminal bypasses the door
lock in seconds.
• Hide your valuables. Wherever and whenever you park,
remove your valuables — including any removable stereos.
If that’s not practical (you’re in the middle of a shopping
day, for example), hide the valuables in the trunk, out of
sight, and then move the vehicle to a different place in
the parking lot. Thieves watch parking lots to see who’s
stashing shopping bags and then heading back into the mall.
• Stow it right. If you have a garage, use it and lock it. If
you don’t, choose a parking spot that’s as well lit and well
travelled as possible, within sight of your windows.
• Think security. If your vehicle has an alarm, use it. If it
doesn’t, consider installing one, or at least using an antitheft
device such as a steering-wheel locking bar. These
items can deter some criminals, and can delay others. If
your vehicle is especially attractive to criminals, consider
installing a security system such as an electronic vehicle
disabling device, a hood-locking device or a location
tracking system.
• Protect yourself. Never leave any identifying information,
such as your name, address, phone number or vehicle
registration/insurance in the vehicle. Carry it in your
wallet or purse instead, and never leave these items in
the vehicle. You’ll also need the registration and insurance
details in case the vehicle is stolen, so it’s a great idea to
make an extra copy of these documents, to keep at home.
• Report it! If you see suspicious people in or around
vehicles, call the Calgary Police Service at 266-1234. And
if your vehicle is broken into or stolen, report it to police
right away, regardless of loss or insurance coverage. Breakins
are rarely isolated — reporting them immediately
with as much detail as possible can help police in their
investigation.
fitness in the new year
By Amanda Oulette: Nutritionist, Personal Trainer and
Fitness Instructor at Trico Centre
A “New Year’s resolution”, especially when it’s a fitness
resolution, can be intimidating.
January is a great time of year to start a fitness routine or
improve on your old one. When you are creating your good
health plan, make sure that it works for you. Use the SMART
acronym to help set your new “good health plan” goals. January
is a great time of year to start a fitness routine or improve on
your old one. When you are creating your good
health plan, make sure that it works for you. Use the SMART
acronym to help set your new “good health plan” goals:
S-Specific, M-measurable,A-attainable, R-realistic, and T-timely.
Write your plan down, share it with a friend, or post it on your
Facebook page – whatever helps you feel accountable.
Here are some tips to make the whole plan work for you:
• Tip 1: Alternative Eating Habits
Changing your eating habits is one of the toughest
mountains to climb, but by setting small, attainable
goals changing eating habits is no longer a challenge. For
example, you might start with eating from a smaller plate,
creating smaller potions, making sure your plate is full of
color, upping your volume of vegetables, or eating more
frequently throughout the day.
• Tip 2: Reinforcing Physical Activity
Incorporating physical activity into your daily routine does
not necessarily mean hitting the gym 6 days a
week for 2 hours. Adding physical activity
can be as simple as taking the stairs
instead of taking the elevator or parking
further away from your destination.
Make an effort to get outside at
least once a day even during these
cold months. If you are the type
to hit the gym, start with making
some small attainable goals, or
bring a friend along and make
the workout a fun challenge.
You’ve got
a New Year’s
Resolution.
wellness goals—
year-round.
• Tip 3: Redefining a balanced lifestyle
Creating that “work-life balance” can be a challenge,
however, small changes can go a long way. Making time
for the things you love in life can make all the difference.
Taking 30 min for yourself whether it is first thing in the
morning or last thing before bed. Take a bath, read a
book or a magazine, enjoy a hot beverage, reconnect with
friends over a hot drink.
You are the master of your “good health plan” Try to enjoy it!
Set goals that work for you and celebrate your successes.
5 key tips for preventing
identity theft
Identity theft occurs when your
personal information is collected
and used by persons without
authorization to do so. The result
could include: applications in your
name being made for credit with
financial institutions, retail outlets, mortgage
companies, and more.
1. Before you reveal any personal identifying information,
find out how it will be used and if it will be shared with
others.
2. Utilize passwords on your credit card, bank and phone
accounts. Avoid using easily available information such as
your mother’s maiden name, your birth date, and the last
four digits of your SIN or your phone number.
3. Minimize the identification, personal information and
number of cards you carry.
4. An identity thief may pick through your garbage or
recycling bins. Be sure to tear or shred receipts, credit
applications, insurance forms, physician statements and
credit offers you get in the mail.
5. Become familiar with schemes such as phishing and vishing
which are designed to glean personal information from
you via the Internet or telephone.
Animal and Bylaw Services
the truth about
idling
Animal & Bylaw Services wants to remind
Calgarians that idling is not an effective
means of warming up your vehicle in the
winter.
Idling does nothing to warm your vehicle’s
transmission, tires, suspension, steering
or wheel bearings. Even in winter weather conditions, fuel
injected engines only require between 30 seconds and 2
minutes of idling to circulate oil through the engine. In addition,
idling for longer than 10 seconds uses more fuel than turning
your engine off and restarting it again.
If the windows of your vehicle are clear, the best way to warm
your vehicle in cold weather is to drive it, avoiding high speeds
and rapid acceleration for the first 5 kilometres.
When vehicles are left running while parked, they produce
emissions that contribute to air pollution and climate change,
affecting our health and the environment. Putting a stop to
engine idling is an easy way to reduce emissions, save money,
and protect your vehicle’s engine!
To help reduce idling in places where it occurs most often,
The City of Calgary developed two signs that can be posted
in problem areas. The signs are intended to act as an instant
reminder for people to turn off their engines. Visit calgary.ca
and search “idling” to find the “Idle Free Zone” sign and the
“Fresh Air Intake” sign to download and print.
White metal idling signs are available for purchase and green
plastic idling signs are available at no charge at:
eMergency planning for your pet
• Ensure you have a
temporary, alternative
place for your cat
or dog to go for
safekeeping in the event
of an emergency.
• In the event of a fire,
do not return to search
for pets. Contact 911 from a safe phone. Firefighters will
search for any animals left behind in a home.
• After placing a 911 medical emergency call, confine your
cat or dog if a home evacuation is not required. This
ensures the safety of cats, dogs and rescue personnel.
• Rescued cats and dogs will be delivered to the Animal
Services Centre for temporary safe keeping. Injured cats
and dogs may be taken to a 24-hour vet clinic.
• Contact Animal & Bylaw Services at 311 (from within
Calgary) or 403-268-CITY (2489) (from outside Calgary)
for information about your pet if he has been brought to
the Animal Services Centre.
• Animal & Bylaw Services provides free door and window
stickers that notify emergency responders that pets may
be in the residence. Get stickers by contacting 311 or
Legislation to protect young
Albertans focus of renewed Tobacco
Reduction Strategy
As Alberta’s Assoc Minister of Wellness, I was honoured to
launch our new provincial tobacco reduction strategy with my
honourable colleague, Health Minister Fred Horne. Our new
strategy proposes legislation to further protect young people
from tobacco, actions to prevent tobacco use, & enhanced
support to help Albertans quit using tobacco products.
“Creating Tobacco-Free Futures: Alberta’s Strategy to Prevent
and Reduce Tobacco Use 2012-2022” will focus on the
following priorities over the next three years:
• introducing legislation restricting the sale of flavoured
tobacco;
• introducing provincial legislation to prohibit tobacco sales
to minors;
• enacting legislation to protect children from second-hand
smoke in vehicles;
• increasing social marketing around the harms associated
with tobacco use;
• enhancing tobacco cessation training for health
professionals;
• expanding workplace, school-based & community
tobacco-cessation programs.
Other initiatives that our government will consider over the
next 10 years include point of sale health warning signage,
tobacco tax increases, further restrictions on smoking in public
areas, & expanding the availability of tobacco cessation products
& resources.
Funding for the strategy will come out of the existing Alberta
Health Services tobacco reduction budget. In addition, the
government has committed $500,000 a year for three years
for a social marketing campaign under the Addiction & Mental
Health Strategy.
Overall smoking rates in Alberta have fallen from 25% in
2001 to 19% in 2010. The targets for 2022 set out in Creating
Tobacco-Free Futures include a decrease in smoking rates
for Albertans aged 15 & older from 19% to 12%. To view
the strategy, please visit: health.alberta.ca/initiatives/tobaccoreduction-strategy-2012.html
Alberta Leads the Country in
Attracting & Retaining Doctors
A recent report released by the Canadian Institute for Health
Information (CIHI) has found that Alberta has seen the greatest
growth in physician numbers among provinces--by far--over the
past decade. The total number of physicians in Alberta grew by
over 3,100 (60%) between 2001 & 2011. That’s far ahead of all
other provinces, & two & a half times greater than the national
growth rate of 23.9%! Other Alberta highlights include:
• 8,258 physicians practiced in Alberta in 2011; an increase
of 3,104 from 2001.
• The family physician growth rate for Alberta from 2001-11
was 56.8%– far ahead of all other provinces & ahead of
the Canadian growth rate of 24.1%.
• Alberta’s physician growth rate over the past five years
was the best among the provinces – 19.8%, well above the
five-year national growth rate of 13.9%. The gains came
during a time when Alberta had the highest population
growth in Canada at 7.7%.
• Migration numbers for 2011 show that more physicians
moved into Alberta from out of province & internationally
than any other province, resulting in a gain of 69 physicians.
• AB has 216 total physicians/100,000 people, a 2.4%
improvement from 2010, & ahead of the national ratio of
209. Since 2001, there has been a 29% improvement in
AB’s physician-to-population ratio. Meanwhile, physicians
in Alberta & Newfoundland & Labrador were the youngest
in 2011, with an average age of 48.1 years in each
province.
• Between 2007 & 2011, AB had the highest increase in the
number of female physicians (29%)
Physicians, 2011” visit: www.cihi.ca
