Broadly speaking they are:
Low Key, Medium Key and
High Key.
Outdoor or lifestyle
photography can also
encompass these three
basic principles. Though far
more controllable in a studio
situation.
Choosing your preferred
style before proceeding
with your session greatly
improves the final outcome,
as you and your
photographer can
concentrate on what’s
important to you by
spending time capturing
images you know you’re
going to love.
Low Key
This page illustrates Low
Key where shapes,
colours, tones and
textures emerge from the
shadows.
Careful positioning of
subject and lights is
needed.
This is probably the most
emotive of the three
styles.

Medium Key
Medium Key has the right
balance of tones and
contrast.
Ideally suited to fashion
style photography
whereby the overall, well
exposed elements
perfectly illustrate all the
subject elements.
This style can express
‘attitude’ quite well.

High Key
This style of studio
photography is by far the
most popular. It’s fun and
relaxed, together with
being bright and
colourful.
You can also move freely
around the studio space
without the need to
rearrange lights or recalibrate
exposure. This is
probably the main reason
so many studio
photographers offer this
style above the others.
Bring lots of energy if this
is your preferred style.

Outdoor
Portrait
Photography
Pick the right day and
outdoor portrait
photography can be the
most rewarding in terms
of creative opportunities.
All the three basic styles
of high, medium and low
(with the right
environment and a little
imagination) can be
expressed, even on the
dullest of days.
The location you choose
Outdoor
also adds extra depth and
expresses a further
element of your character,
whether you choose a
local park, forest, derelict
mill or even capturing
your outdoor interests
like riding, climbing are
trekking.
