St. Louis Area Donors With Gratitude - Sisters of Divine Providence

Dear friends of the Sisters of Divine Providence:
Last year was quite a year! The U. S. economic storm spared no one: individuals, families, schools, businesses,
and charitable organizations—all have been affected in some way, but as we take stock of the past year
in terms of advancing the mission, it is clear that the Sisters of Divine Providence and their ministries
weathered the economic storm relatively well. How did that happen? The answer lies within the pages of this
report: you, our partner in Mission, made the difference!
This report covers the fiscal year July 1, 2008 through June 30, 2009. Our results show an overall decline of
5 percent from the previous year. By comparison, the nation’s larger charitable organizations are forecasting
declines by a median of 9 percent. The New York Times this summer reported that charitable giving declined
in 2008 by the largest percentage in 50 years!
Our report shows that gifts to the Sisters’ sponsored ministries La Posada Providencia and Room at the Inn
actually increased, but unrestricted gifts and gifts to the Sisters’ retirement fund declined from the previous
year. The economic downturn did indeed have its effect.
What these results also show is that the overwhelming majority of our friends continued to provide support.
Furthermore, these results show that we made it through these hard times with God’s Providence and the
strength of your commitment to the mission of Divine Providence. Some of our friends wrote us in distress
over the need to make smaller donations—experiencing the same financial uncertainties as we were. We
marvel at this commitment and generosity. We marvel and give thanks to you!
Certainly the year 2010 comes with no less uncertainty than the year before; however, we are bolstered by the
support you have given us and the gifts that continue to come. We are ready to embark on the new challenges
that lie ahead, and we can say with confidence that together we have the power to continue to make God’s
Providence more visible in the world.
