mind matters Local events spotlight mental health A FrAmework For AwAreness As the story goes, the mythical phoenix rises out of fire and ashes and is reborn every 500 years. It’s a powerful image that resonates with those who have struggled with mental illness. And for the past six years, it has been the theme of a community-wide effort to shed light on mental health. “Framing the Phoenix” is an annual art exhibit held at The ARTS Project showcasing the work of artists whose lives have been touched by mental illness. The aim is to reduce the stigma and discrimination that often comes with a diagnosis of mental illness, explains Beth Muia, a nurse in the mood and anxiety disorders program of St. Joseph’s Regional Mental Health Care. Organized by the Mental Health Promotions Committee, a coalition of citizens and professionals from many community groups, the exhibit has displayed more than 450 exceptional pieces of work over the years. CAring For Your spirit The holiday season is almost here and with it will come family gatherings, parties and preparations for cherished traditions. For some, however, the holiday season can be stressful and lonely. Instead of joy, they experience the holiday blues with feelings of pain and loss. Understanding these feelings, the spiritual care team of St. Joseph’s Health Care, London will be hosting a special non-denominational service this year to help people through the holidays. “Our Blue Holiday Service will give people who are experiencing feelings of loss, isolation and sadness a chance to reflect on their feelings and better understand them,” says spiritual care director Ciaran McKenna. “The hope is they will gain the personal strength to enjoy the season.” The Blue Holiday Service will be held Dec. 1 at 5 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Chapel in St. Joseph’s Hospital. St. JoSeph’S notebook In May, the Framing the Phoenix exhibit at The ARTS Project in London displayed the exceptional talent of artists touched by mental health issues. turning point For VeterAns CAre Time is marching on for Second World War veterans. The average age of these veterans is 86, so while the number requiring care is decreasing, the care needs for those who remain are increasing. St. Joseph’s Health Care, London has been working with Veterans Affairs Canada to develop a transition plan to address this turning point in veterans care at Parkwood Hospital. While the plan involves a reduction of 76 beds by September 2011, veterans care will continue as one of St. Joseph’s most significant programs. There will still be 186 inpatient veterans care beds as well as the operational stress injury clinic, which provides outpatient mental health care to veterans, members of the Canadian Forces, and eligible members of the RCMP.
