aRTS aND CuLTuRe Zama mkosi Ceo. national film and Video foundation Zama Mkosi has had a long and illustrious career in the media and entertainment industry. After graduating from the University of Natal with a BA LLB she had extensive training in intellectual property law at patent offices in Geneva, The Hague, Stockholm and Harare. As senior legal advisor to the media and motion picture business unit at the Industrial Development Corporation she closed deals on films such as Tsotsi and Hotel Rwanda. Mkosi has served on various media boards, among them the Film Resource Unit (an African film distribution organisation) and the National Film and Video Foundation Council, of which she was deputy chairperson. As executive producer for Heartlines, a television series that addressed social issues in South Africa, she created and led a media 144 Book of South AfrICAn women 2012 strategy for radio, television and print while also driving production. Hopeville, another television series for which she was executive producer, was nominated for an Emmy Award. In May 2012 Mkosi attended the Cannes International Film Festival where South Africa was represented by the largest number of films in its 12 years of participation. South Africa signed a co-production treaty with Ireland, providing for a working relationship between the two countries. Mkosi, whose role entails spearheading the growth of the film industry and promoting it to the business sector, also gave a presentation at the Association of Film Commissioners International Locations Expo in Los Angeles, where the Brics (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) nations assembled to explore the importance of the fast-growing film and TV economy.
