In our Spring/Summer <strong>2012</strong> collection,<br />
we have combined a building block from the<br />
past with an emphasis on today’s market<br />
trends and an eye toward tomorrow’s<br />
future influences. The result: revolutionary<br />
designs that support healthy living,<br />
individual expression, and freedom<br />
of exploration.<br />
This inspiring seasonal collection exemplifies<br />

OUR HISTORY /<br />
THE SANITA LEGACY<br />
SINCE 1907.<br />
To fully understand<br />
our current collections,<br />
see where the creative<br />
journey began ...<br />
many, many, many<br />
years ago.<br />
1481<br />
1791<br />
The first written accounts<br />
of wooden clogs are found<br />
in Denmark. For the next<br />
400 years, wooden clogs are<br />
the most widely used type of<br />
footwear, especially in Jutland<br />
where the vast tracks of woodland<br />
clogs are produced on an<br />
extensive scale.<br />
Farms in central Jutland<br />
hire a craftsman to make<br />
wooden clogs for selling at<br />
local markets or to traders. A<br />
skilled clogmaker is expected<br />
to make at least five pairs of<br />
clogs a day.<br />
1870<br />
1899<br />
Newly made clogs are smoked<br />
to harden the clogs and prevent<br />
the wood from cracking. It is<br />
during this process that the clogs<br />
acquire their characteristic<br />
red-brown color.<br />
Depending on the intended<br />
use, clogs are fitted with a metal<br />
bracket or a lined leather strap<br />
across the instep.<br />
The 18-year-old<br />
shepherd boy, Christen<br />
Meldgaard Andersen,<br />
is apprenticed as a<br />
slipper maker. During<br />
his apprenticeship, he<br />
learns the craft that<br />
becomes the foundation<br />
of <strong>Sanita</strong>’s success.<br />
1900<br />
1907<br />
The wooden clog<br />
with leather upper<br />
becomes the most popular<br />
model in Denmark.<br />
On February 4, Christen<br />
Meldgaard Andersen opens<br />
his store and workshop<br />
at Skolegade in Herning.<br />
Riding his bicycle with two<br />
pairs of clogs under his arm,<br />
he sets out to visit the local<br />
general stores. Sales boom<br />
when he begins travelling<br />
by train to visit potential<br />
customers in the larger<br />
nearby towns.<br />
HISTORY IS STILL IN THE<br />
1924<br />
Christen Meldgaard Andersen<br />
moves the company to larger<br />
premises at Mindegade, and<br />
sales steadily increase.
1940<br />
Christen’s son, Johannes<br />
Meldgaard Andersen, starts<br />
working at the company and<br />
becomes a co-owner seven<br />
years later.<br />
1965<br />
Clog production<br />
is transferred to<br />
an independent<br />
company, A/S<br />
<strong>Sanita</strong> Træfodtøj,<br />
situated in Herning,<br />
Denmark.<br />
1970<br />
<strong>Sanita</strong> maintains its<br />
position and launches colorful<br />
clogs and that year’s big hit –<br />
wooden-soled boots.<br />
1983<br />
<strong>Sanita</strong> is converted into a<br />
holding company – and<br />
exports grow.<br />
The flexible San-Flex model<br />
launches and becomes a<br />
tremendous success. Clogs<br />
are no longer made with<br />
wooden soles only.<br />

2001<br />
<strong>Sanita</strong> forms a sales company<br />
in the US to better service the<br />
American market.<br />
<strong>Sanita</strong> is sold to new owners,<br />
who reach 40 million Euro in<br />
sales from distributors in more<br />
than 50 countries.<br />

<strong>Sanita</strong> produces more than one<br />
million pairs of clogs annually,<br />
of which just over half are<br />
exported.<br />

2009<br />

(NEW) MATERIAL / WATER RESISTANT OIL LEATHER<br />
The water resistant oiled leather is tested according to European<br />
norm EN ISO 5403 :2002 prepared by European Committee for<br />
Standardization – This international standard specifies a method for<br />
determining the dynamic water resistance of leather. It is applicable for<br />
all all flexible leathers but is particularly suitable for leather intended<br />
for footwear uppers. The water resistance of the leather along with<br />
the OIL finish ensures easy care of the leather.<br />
NOTE: Due to their construction clogs are not water resistant.<br />
(NEW) MATERIAL / CHROME-FREE LEATHER<br />
The chrome-free leather is “SANOTAN.” A special European tanning<br />
process creates Sanotan leather. The result is a soft and light<br />
leather with natural appearance, color intensity, and better resistance<br />
than traditional leathers.<br />
• Sanotan leather is environmentally friendly.<br />
• Sanotan avoids most environmental problems and damage caused<br />
by traditional tanning methods.<br />
• Sanotan is tested and approved to be harmless to aquatic life.<br />
• Meets all Ecolabel requirements.<br />
• Sanotan leather contributes to well-being because it:<br />
- Is more breathable, so it is better at permitting sweat to evaporate.<br />
- Improves blood circulation.<br />
- Is recommended for people with low body temperature.<br />
- Reduces fatigue by helping to counter lactic acid build up.<br />
• Sanotan is a chrome-free leather built on a base of titanium<br />
(a safe metal approved for medical use inside the body).<br />
