From the Executive
Director’s Desk
Ihope everyone had a safe
and happy holiday. One of
the finest lessons learned
along my walk in life is to
leave trials, tribulations and
mistakes in the past and move
on. As we welcome a new
year with its promise of joy
Judy Marshall and opportunities let’s all
make a pledge to a new beginning. The Board of
Directors and the staff of the Aurora Chamber of
Commerce wish that 2011 is a year of success,
good health and prosperity for all our members.
Santa Claus Parade
I would be remiss if I did not recognize those
volunteers who worked on the Chamber float for
the Santa Claus parade. This year truly was a
family affair! Laurie MacDonald developed the
shopping bag idea from the Parade Committee’s
concept of “Shop our Members” and, with her
husband Brian, constructed the shopping bag
panels. Patty Poulin-Ulbricht gathered all the
trimmings we needed for the shopping bags and
together with her husband Dave Peel, assembled
the shopping bags alongside Greg Smith, Laurie
and Brian and their son Dan.
Bob Ince, thank you for joining us on the parade
route and assisting with the disassembly of the
float. Tina Konecny, in addition to helping with
the decoration and disassembly of the float,
spent hours decorating boxes to look like
presents and then danced the length of the
parade route with Patti’s son, John Peel and his
friend Jordan Figuerdo.
Thank you as well to Shelley Ware, Special Events
Coordinator, and her staff from Town of Aurora
who were responsible for all the details and
logistics of the parade. Thank you to Caroline
Rusnell, from the Chamber office, for ensuring
deadlines were met, that we were all in the right
place at the right time, and for bringing her
husband Dave and son Chris for the disassembly
of the float.
A very special appreciation to Kevin Vanderpost
from Mastercut Property Services who found and
picked up straw for us, provided us with a trailer
and heated garage for decorating the float, and
then transported the float to and from the parade
as well as in the parade. You are quite amazing!
Member Services Coordinator
The Chamber has a new part-time staff member.
Teri Hastings joined us the week of November 22
as the Member Services Coordinator. Many of
you may know Teri as the Coordinator of the
Chamber’s Annual Street Festival. Her new
responsibilities will include contacting and
visiting members and responding to leads for
potential members. She has already
enthusiastically called and visited many new
companies in Aurora and has brought us a
number of new members.
Insufficient Labour Supply
Did you know that by 2031 the demand for talent
in the workplace will exceed supply? Over the
next five to 10 years, aging baby boomers - an
estimated 100,000 to 150,000 people - will retire
in record numbers, according to a report
published by the Regional Municipality of York
titled “Beyond the Boomers: A York Region
Employer’s Guide to the Labour Force
Shortage”. The concern is that many businesses
will lose organizational knowledge and skills and
experience a labour shortfall through retirement,
and younger workers may not be available in
sufficient number to meet the needs of the
region’s growing economy. This will be due to an
aging population, decreased fertility rates and
current immigration levels. These issues must be
addressed over the next 20 years before York
Region employers face the situation of having
more jobs than people to fill the vacant positions.
The York Region Economic Strategy Branch
undertook an Aging Workforce Study in October,
2008 to alert York Region employers of an
impending labour shortage; help employers
reduce labour shortages by urging them to take
action; and provide tools to help employers deal
with workforce planning. Free workshops have
been held across York Region in November and
December, 2010 as a follow-up to assist
employers to address this pending challenge.
Strategic Plan
In response to an objective in the Strategic Plan
which states that the Chamber will work to
understand diverse member needs, we will be
contacting members from each business sector
to help us review the needs of their group and
consider ways to meet those needs effectively.
We will be forming a group for home-based
businesses, small business owners, retailers,
manufacturers and so on. The Chamber has
realized that as membership increases and
becomes more diverse, it has become harder to
offer a one-size-fits-all approach. We want to
know what your needs are so we can respond in
the best way possible. Your input will be
invaluable as we begin the planning process for
the next and future years.
Please do not hesitate to contact us at the
Chamber office if you need information or have
questions or concerns.
Until next time . . . .
Judy
