nigra - Black Mulberry
____ Up to 10 m tall tree with dense, rounded crown, remains often
as a shrub or grown as espalier tree in the climate of Central
Europe; leaves broadly egg-shaped, rough and dark green above,
lighter green and downy underneath; flowers, both male and
female, appearing in May; fruits ovate, deep red, 1 to 3 cm long,
with a sweet-spicy taste. S. Zone 6b.

____ 0.5 to 1.5 m tall, broom-like and upright growing small shrub;
sprigs reddish-brown, rod-like, with an aromatic fragrance; plant
is dioecious; flowers on old twigs, borne in about 1.5 cm long,
bronze-coloured, cone-like catkins - a frost-hardy plant for wet to
moist, acidic and sandy-peaty soils, suitable for the recultivation
of cutaway bogs, marschlands etc., very useful in floristry. Z.

____ An evergreen, strictly upright, multi-stemmed shrub. Leaves opposite,
30 to 50 cm long and wide, palmate (2-) to 3-fold, leaflets
3 to 7 cm long, elliptic to linear, tapered to a long point, base
cup-shaped, reddish when young, turning green later, with a
lighter-coloured underside and magenta autumn colours. Flowers
white, borne on up to 35 cm long terminal and upright panicle.
Fruits globose (6 to 8 mm) bright red and remain long on
plant. An attractive plant, very much loved in Japanese temple
gardens, also suitable for container gardening and floristic use.
Recommended for semi-shady and protected areas. H, K, S.
