to dewater the mine. The dewatering is
expected to be completed in about a month
with a crew of five to seven men employed.
The Iron Duke adjoins the Oaks
and Reese mine which is said to have a
production record of $1,800,000.
ConaoJidated Tungaten is producing between
40 and 50 tons of tungsten ore
daily for treatment in its 50-ton gravity
concentration plant near Duckland in
Drum Valley. A crew of 24 men is employed
and work is directed by J. D. Spittler,
general manager, Box 366, Dinuba,
California. The company plans to drive
a new tunnel through the mountain to improve
ventilation and to develop the ore
body. Operating personnel includes Ray
Henricksen, general superintendent, 1834
Arthur Avenue, Fresno 4, California;
Ellis Sterling, mill superintendentj Jack
Hardy, mine superintendent; and T. A.
Hazelton, purchasing agent, all addressed
at Box 366, Dinuba.
The new tax assessment set for the Fontana,
California, steel plant of the K.iaer
Company, Inc., Iron and Steel Division,
totals $10,200,000 and represents an increase
of 15 per cent over the tax assessment
set last year. The Kaiser concern
sought an assessment of $6,000,000,
stating that U. S. steel mills pay an average
property tax of $8 per ton of finished
product. A total of $68,000,000 had been
expended on the Kaiser properties up to
March 1, 1944, according to testimony of
the company at the tax hearings.
Between 900 and 1,000 tons of talc
and limestone are produced monthly at
the property of the Blue Star Minea, Ltd.,
at Bigpine, Inyo County, California. A
crew of 16 men is employed under the
direction of Ernest Brazil, general superintendent.
Ira C. Brolsma is mine and
mill Buperintendent. The company is
headed by Hugh M. Foster, and Andrew
C. Getty, 810 South Spring Street, Los
Angeles, California, is secretary and general
manager.
Old workings in the Red Cloud mine at
Hornitos, Mariposa County, California,
have been completely reconditioned and
preparations are being made to sink the
shaft to greater depth. A tailings dam has
been built, equipment has been repaired,
and limited development work has been
under way during the past month. Steady
operations are planned as soon as normal
gold production is permitted. The Red
Cloud was worked extensively several
years ago with good results and indications
are said to be favorable for persistence
of the main veins at depth. The
mine has been held under lease for some
time by R. A. Fredricks, Box 57, Clovis,
California.
K. W. Walters, Happy Camp, California,
mine engineer and suction dredge operator,
is reported to be acquiring dredging
ground in the Happy Camp district,
which he plans to work with a large suction
dredge of his own design. He also
plans to use a dragline dredge, with tractor
and bulldozer, in connection with the
suction dredge.
Shaft sinking is under way at the Nelly­
Kayo gold mine near Mt. Bullion about
two miles from Bear Valley, Mariposa
County, California. The work is being
done by the Ruth-Bobby Mining Company,
W. B. Brule, general manager, a limited
partnership composed of Louis R. Lurie
and Felix Kahn of San Francisco. Limited
operations are being conducted under
a WPB order and the crew at present is
restricted to seven men. R. B. Lamb,
formerly manager of La Victoire mine near
Mariposa, is superintendent. The mine
was held under lease by Lamb, and later
was leased by Brule, who assigned his
