Established in 2008, the
Toshiba Youth Conference for a
Sustainable Future offers high
s c h o o l s t u d e n t s t h e
opportunity to think creatively
about how to build a more
sustainable world while
developing lasting friendships
with students from other
cultures.
During the school year, teams
of students from four countries
–Japan, Poland, Thailand and
United States– conduct
research and share ideas
about environmental topics.
When the school year is over, students travel to Japan for a week
long summer camp devoted to sharing what they have learned and
to developing proposals and action plans to take back to their home
communities.
While in Japan, students visit sites of environmental interest, ranging
from traditional farms to high tech facilities where they meet with
local scholars and experts. Sharing meals and traveling together
helps students to bridge cultural and language barriers and to
develop a deeper understanding of their world.
A dedicated website, www.act-eco.net, enables conference
participants to share their experiences and discoveries with each
other and with the world.
